Chapter 2: The King in the Shadows

Location: Leo's private office, above the nightclub.

The walls of Leo's office were lined with bookshelves and elegant art, a stark contrast to the chaos he controlled in the world below. Behind a massive mahogany desk, he sat with a cigarette smoldering between his fingers, his sharp eyes scanning the reports Marco had placed before him.

To the world, Leone "Leo" Ricci was the epitome of a polished entrepreneur—a billionaire with a sprawling empire in luxury goods, tech investments, and construction. His name was on charity galas, headlines, and socialite guest lists. But beneath the surface, Leo's true empire was built on blood, fear, and power.

---

The Dual Life of Leo

Few people understood the complexity of Leo's world. By day, he was a respected businessman, his name associated with innovation and wealth. By night, he ruled the underground with an iron fist.

His empire extended far beyond the borders of the city, reaching into international arms deals, illegal mining operations, and a web of loyalists who would kill or die on his command. His reputation as a mafia boss was an open secret in the underworld—a paradox of elegance and brutality.

Despite his influence, Leo lived by a strict code: trust no one and never show weakness. His past had taught him that.

---

The Tragedy of Trust

Leo's rise to power had not been easy. Born into a struggling family, he had been thrust into the criminal world after his father—a small-time smuggler—was betrayed by his closest friend. The betrayal cost his family their lives, leaving Leo as the sole survivor.

By the age of 18, he had taken control of his father's failing syndicate, turning it into a powerhouse. Every deal, every decision, was driven by the memory of his family's downfall. Trust was a luxury he could not afford.

Now, at 30, he was untouchable—or so he thought.

Leo's Guarded World

The knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Marco entered, his expression tense as always.

"Is the stranger gone?" Leo asked, not bothering to look up.

"Yes, but..." Marco hesitated. "There's something strange about him. He didn't seem scared or overwhelmed, like most people who accidentally cross paths with us."

Leo flicked the ash from his cigarette. "Irrelevant. If he's stupid enough to linger, he won't last the night."

Marco nodded but didn't leave. "Do you ever think about the rumors?"

Leo glanced up, his eyes cold. "What rumors?"

"About someone controlling everything from the shadows. A ruler even we don't know."

Leo let out a sharp laugh. "Fairy tales. There's no one above me. Don't waste your time on fantasies."

Marco nodded and left the room, but Leo's smirk faded as he leaned back in his chair. His instincts nagged at him, a faint unease he couldn't shake.

The Parrot Companion

Leo's gaze shifted to the corner of the room, where his grey parrot sat on a perch, preening its feathers. "What do you think, Nero?"

The bird tilted its head and squawked. "No trust! No trust!"

Leo chuckled, the sound cold. "You're smarter than most people."

He stood and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing down at the city that sprawled beneath him. It was his kingdom, built brick by brick with his own hands. Yet to

night, for the first time in years, he felt a crack in his armor.
