Chapter 4: The Spark of Defiance
Location: Leo's office, early evening.
Leo paced the length of his office, the glass of whiskey in his hand untouched. The reports Marco had delivered earlier were spread across his desk, filled with details about Kai—or rather, the glaring absence of them.
"He's clean," Marco said, standing by the door. "Too clean. No records, no slips, nothing. He's either a ghost or hiding behind one hell of a cover."
Leo's fingers tightened around the glass. "Everyone has a past, Marco. No one just appears out of thin air."
---
A Paradox in Plain Sight
Marco nodded but hesitated before adding, "There's something else. People like him—they don't usually wander into a place like ours. It's almost as if... he wants to be noticed."
Leo frowned, his mind working through the possibilities. What kind of man could walk into a lion's den without so much as flinching?
"He's playing a game," Leo murmured. "The question is, what's the end goal?"

A Night Unfolds
Location: The nightclub, later that night.
Leo stood on the balcony, watching the crowd below. His gaze scanned the room until it landed on Kai, seated at a corner table, his posture relaxed as if he were at a quiet café instead of one of the most dangerous places in the city.
Kai was reading a book—a book, of all things—in the dim light of the club, the bass of the music vibrating through the air.
Leo's curiosity got the better of him. He descended the stairs, ignoring the whispers and stares as he approached the table.

A Conversation in the Dark
"What the hell are you doing?" Leo asked, his voice sharp as he slid into the seat across from Kai.
Kai looked up, his face illuminated by the flickering light of a nearby candle. "Reading."
"In a nightclub?"
Kai smiled faintly. "Why not? It's quiet enough in here."
Leo couldn't suppress a short laugh, though it carried no humor. "You're either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. Do you know whose table you're sitting at?"
Kai closed the book with a soft thud, his gaze meeting Leo's. "Yours, I assume."
Leo leaned back, crossing his arms. "And that doesn't bother you?"
"Should it?" Kai asked, his tone disarming.
---
A Growing Frustration
Leo's eyes narrowed. "You're either the most oblivious man I've ever met, or you're hiding something."
Kai leaned forward slightly, his demeanor calm but his voice carrying a hint of challenge. "Maybe I just don't scare as easily as most people."
For a moment, neither man spoke, the tension between them palpable.
"You've got guts," Leo finally said, standing. "But guts won't save you if you step out of line."
Kai watched him leave, his expression unreadable.
---
The Pieces Begin to Move
Back in his office, Leo stood by the window, staring out at the city. Nero squawked from his perch, the sound breaking the silence.
"Something's off about him," Leo said aloud, as if the bird could offer advice. "People don't act that way unless they're hiding something."
Nero squawked again, mimicking a phrase Leo often said. "No trust! No trust!"
Leo smirked but said nothing, his thoughts consumed by the enigma that was Kai.
Whatever the stranger's motives were, one thing was clear: Leo wasn't a
bout to let him wander freely through his world without uncovering the truth.
