Chapter 8 - chapter 8: an unexpected letter

Sythrik gazed at him, dumbfounded beyond reason pondering scenarios or reasons as to why this famed individual knew about him and his sister. He, with a confused tone replied, "I am... Why do you ask though?"

The young man smiled and said, "Seems my intuition was right. She did show a picture, although that was of a much younger version of you... Perhaps fifteen?"

Both Sythrik and Lynette looked confused, however, Sythrik had a faint idea of what was happening.

The young man noticed their confusion and quickly informed with a calm, almost serene tone, "you must be confused as to how I knew your sister, pardon me for not taking that into consideration."

The blonde man picked a seat and sat himself in between the duo, then he began talking with a relaxed posture, "where do I begin..." after a moment of thinking and pondering, he had finally organized his thoughts, "I should probably introduce myself."

"I am Sennan of the Reign family. I am nineteen years of age, and I am a professional model and an artist. Its a pleasure to meet you, Sythrik Montague." Sennan reached out, gesturing for a handshake. "Its a pleasure to meet you too. I guess there's no need to tell you about myself right?" Sythrik replied as he shook his hand

Sennan laughed lightly and said, "I guess your right. Your sister has already told me of your work, name, and the little amount of hobbies you possess... However," he pointed his gazed toward Lynette and continued, "I don't think she mentioned a partner." with a sly grin.

The easily flustered Lynette quickly stood up and pushed both her hands on the desk while yelling, "I-I'm not his girl-g-g-girlfriend!!!"

Sennan and Sythrik gazed at her with widened eyes, then, the two fell into a warm chuckle.

Lynette, Even more flustered then before asked, "w-what's so funny!?"

"Its nothing, don't mind it." Sennan said as he recomposed himself. "Well, I won't waste anymore of your times so I'll give a quick briefing then be on my way."

As Lynette sat down and Sythrik nodded in approval and readiness, Sennan started, "your sister asked me to deliver you that letter to you when she heard I was planning a trip here."

"Sorry, but how are you and my sister acquainted?" Sythrik asked simply, yet surprised.

"That's right, I forgot to tell. Your sister and I are siblings in law, meaning the two of us are too." Sennan answered.

Sythrik's surprise was hard to hide as he both gaped and widened his eyes. He quickly recomposed himself, organized his thoughts and said, "If that's the case, then I believe I can easily guess the contents of the letter."

Sennan smiled and informed, "It seems to me that you have been kept in the shadow about her relationship with my brother."

Sennan waited a little, then, after Sythrik sighed, he said after a small moment of silence, "They have been together for around seven months. he's a good guy with both wealth and connections. he has contributed in fundings for those that have little and built, I believe around four shelters across the capital of Tarot for the homeless. He regularly sends people to scan the multiple area for people in trouble to then guide them to either a new home, parents, and such. You don't have to worry about your sister marrying the wrong guy, I can vouch for his worthiness."

Sythrik looked at him in surprise and said, "Thank you for telling me. I can finally eat with a mind at ease."

"Well, its getting late so I'll get going... Also, I don't wish to disturb your 'date' any further." Sennan bid farewell and walked away. Suddenly, a handful of bodyguards in loose suits paraded around Sennan, guiding him across the crowd before disappearing from Sythrik and Lynette's vision.

After a moment of silence, Lynette asked, "Aren't you going to open the letter?" Sythrik thought for a moment and said, "No, I plan on saving it till I get home."

...

After a long moment of silence, the waitress reappeared with a plate in each hand. "Here's you orders, sir and miss." the waitress said as she gently placed the food down to their respective owners. As the waitress returned to her refined posture, she said with a careful tone, "If there is anything else, know that I am available at the counter. If I'm not there, either yell or ask another."

"We will, thanks." the two said in harmony. When the waitress heard the reply, she turned and left to her other customers.

Sythrik stared down at the steak covered in brown Sauce with potatoes on the side. After a five seconds of analyzing the steak, he picked up his fork and knife, and gently cut a piece of steak and ate it with a slow and decisive momentum. After chewing for a delicious amount of time, he said after swallowing the food, "This is really delicious. Good choice, Lynette."

Lynette, with red cheeks replied with a simple, "don't mention it. Next time I recommend you try the-" She rambled on about countless foods, almost like a sponsor speaking restlessly for money's sake. She stopped from time to time to eat out of her own tomato soup and butter smeared bread, then continued. "She's like a kid rambling on about her day at school when she's let some walls down... Hope I can bring the rest of the walls down one day and talk to 'her'. After all, whenever she acts according to her own judgement and not other's opinions. She somehow becomes the most interesting, and magnificent person I've ever laid my eyes upon."

Suddenly, she stopped. For some reason, as soon as her gaze met Sythrik and the bowl was empty did she notice how deeply he focused in on her. Leaning his chin atop two hands that crossed fingers while staring at her with a warm smile.

Sythrik noticed her nervousness returning, trying to figure out the reason. However, for him it was merely random occurrences that did not have an answer. Because, he's utterly dumb and unable to understand her romantic feelings toward himself.

"Its getting late," Sythrik said while straightening his posture. "How about we continue the conversation next time?"

Lynette looked at the food empty table and stood up. "You're right, we should end it here."

Sythrik, noticing her sad expression, said, "don't worry, we have plenty of time on our hands. I'll be sure to invite you another time so don't be too down in the dumps." Standing up, he continued, "and if you ever want someone to eat with, or just hang around with, then come knock at my door and I'll try to make some time." Lynette's eyes widened, revealing a small, yet profound smile beneath. "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind."

As they were about to leave, Sythrik went alone to the reception to pay. "Here, thanks for the great service, young miss." He said as he handed over the gold coin. The waitress said with a shocked face, "uhm, sir... This is too much, this could pay for at least two more meals for the two of you." Sythrik turned around and said, "consider it a tip. Farewell." while started walking while gently waving dismissively.

As he returned to Lynette, he asked, "should we walk, or take a carriage?"

dumbfounded, she asked, "pardon?"

After a small moment of silence, while locking gazes with each other, did Sythrik finally reply, "well, I can't let you go home by yourself so late." with a newfound realization, she spoke with a nervous tone, "uhm, you don't have to. I-I kind of live right here..."

"huh..." Sythrik said, filled with utter confusion.

"This restaurant is my family's, so I live at the second floor at the moment..." Lynette informed.

"I-I see," Sythrik said. "Then, goodbye. I hope you sleep well." He bid farewell, then, Lynette mimicked him the same.

...

Sythrik, now standing before an average wooden door that stood between layers of dark brown bricks with some wooden pieces covering the edges, grabbed the door knob and twisted it. He was met with a gust of familiar scents while pushing himself inside with normal, careful steps. He put his shoes down before walking inside yet another door. As he repeated the previous action of opening a door, he was met with a very small corridor. On the left side, almost right next to the corridor door, stood a stairway that curved to the right after a handful of steps. On the right, a little further, was a door that led his bathroom. And on the other side of bathroom door, was a candlelight, flickering gently along with the rhythm his steps.

As he reached the end of the corridor, he was faced with his familiar living, resting on the left side of the squared room. And on the right side, was the kitchen. There was no windows as he lived arm to arm with other buildings in the midst of the city of Lorath.

He walked over to the sofa that was resting it's back on the wall, and sat down. He pulled out the envelope he received from Sennan and placed it on top of the wooden table in front of him.

"It feels way too predictable, so much so I barely don't want to open it." he muttered before unraveling the cover.

He picked up the letter and read the text aloud, "dear brother, I have written you this letter to inform you of my upcoming marriage. It is a day that means much to me, and my betrodden. In regards to that, I hope you are willing to share this moment with the two of us, and your new family, to both get acquainted and reunited with your old family. At July ninety-sixth, my fiancé's brother in law, Sennan, will come and ask whether or not you've accepted. if yes, then you'll accompany him on his way back. If no, then I'll hate you for the rest of my life!

Love, your favorite sister, Selena."

Sythrik put it down, and stared at it for a moment before muttering, "But sister... That's five days from now!"
