Chapter 17 - Chapter 18: The Art of Seals

Oliver sat cross-legged on the floor of his small apartment, an old scroll stretched out before him. Dim candlelight flickered, casting long shadows across the room as he traced the intricate symbols inked onto the parchment.

Fūinjutsu—the Shinobi Art of Sealing.

It was unlike anything he had trained in before. Archery was about precision. Taijutsu was about instinct. Even his mental tactics relied on reading people and controlling the flow of battle. But sealing jutsu?

This was pure strategy and preparation—turning knowledge into a weapon.

The Fundamentals of Sealing

Fūinjutsu was an art that most shinobi ignored. It required patience, control, and an understanding of how chakra flowed through inked symbols. But Oliver saw its potential immediately.

A well-placed seal could:

• Store weapons, giving him an endless arsenal without carrying extra weight.

• Suppress chakra, making it difficult for enemies to use their techniques.

• Create traps, ensuring the battlefield always worked in his favor.

• Enhance his own abilities, reinforcing his speed, durability, or reflexes.

If he combined Fūinjutsu with his trickster mindset, he could turn every fight into a game his enemies couldn't win.

First Lesson: The Storage Seal

Oliver started with something simple—weapon storage seals.

Using a fine brush, he carefully painted the kanji for storage onto a blank piece of paper, infusing it with a controlled flow of chakra.

Nothing happened.

He frowned. He had followed the instructions in the scroll perfectly.

Then he remembered something from chakra control training—it wasn't just about following a pattern. It was about understanding the intent behind it.

Taking a deep breath, he focused. He visualized the ink acting as a bridge between the physical and chakra worlds. He reached for a kunai, pressing it against the seal—

Poof!

The kunai vanished into the paper.

Oliver grinned.

A second later, he channeled his chakra again—Poof! The kunai reappeared in his hand.

It worked.

This was just the beginning.

Advanced Training: Trap Seals & Chakra Suppression

Training with Tenten

Tenten had an impressive knowledge of weapons, so Oliver sought her out for advice.

"Storage seals are useful, but you need speed," she told him. "A good fighter doesn't wait to retrieve their weapons—they make sure they're always within reach."

She showed him how to ink seals onto his arm guards, allowing him to summon arrows and tonfa instantly.

After some trial and error, Oliver managed to develop his own modified version—a compact seal that released weapons directly into his grip instead of just onto the ground.

Now, he could be unarmed one second and fully equipped the next.

Training with Tetsuo

Tetsuo, being a weapons master, helped Oliver refine his traps.

"Traps should do more than just explode," Tetsuo explained. "They should mislead, disorient, and force your enemy into a disadvantage."

Oliver experimented, modifying simple explosive tags into:

• Smoke Seal: Releases a thick, blinding cloud of smoke.

• Snare Seal: When stepped on, it locks the opponent's foot in place for several seconds.

• Illusion Seal: A minor genjutsu that creates a flickering afterimage of Oliver to distract enemies.

His combat style was evolving.

Training with Rock Lee

Lee was confused at first.

"You are using ink instead of fists?"

"It's called strategy, Lee," Oliver smirked. "You fight head-on. I make sure my opponent is weaker before I fight."

Lee didn't fully understand, but he respected Oliver's determination.

Together, they practiced high-speed combat with seals, forcing Oliver to learn how to activate his traps and summons mid-battle.

Breakthrough: The Chakra Suppression Seal

One night, while experimenting alone, Oliver stumbled upon something far more dangerous than simple storage or traps—Chakra Suppression Seals.

Hidden deep within an old scroll in the library, he found notes on blocking an enemy's chakra flow temporarily.

This could allow him to:

• Disable enemy jutsu users.

• Weaken stronger opponents.

• Level the playing field against high-tier shinobi.

It was difficult—the balance had to be perfect. Too little chakra, and the seal would do nothing. Too much, and it could be unstable or permanent.

Oliver spent weeks perfecting it, testing it on himself.

Finally, he managed a working version—a small seal that could attach to an enemy on contact, disrupting their chakra for a few seconds.

Against a skilled opponent, a few seconds was all he needed.

Daily Life & Cooking

Between training, Oliver still had to survive daily life in the village.

With the growing hostility from villagers, he had to use Transformation Jutsu just to shop for supplies.

To save money, he started cooking for himself, making simple but hearty meals—roasted fish, rice, and dumplings. Sometimes, Lee and Tenten would join him, giving him a rare sense of normal friendship in a world that increasingly saw him as an outsider.

But Oliver didn't care.

He wasn't here to make the village love him.

He was here to become stronger.

And soon, they'd have no choice but to respect him.
