Chapter 36 - Part 35

There was no point in wasting any more time.

Amanda's tears streamed uncontrollably, her hands trembling as she opened the divorce papers.

Just as she was about to sign, the office door swung open.

It was the company's vice president.

"Ms. Johnson, that project—Lucas?"

His face lit up in surprise at the sight of me.

"Finally! You have no idea how much of a headache this project has been. Hurry up and—"

"I'm not here to return to work."

I cut him off, then turned back to Amanda.

"Sign the papers. I have an interview to get to."

Amanda took a deep breath and shut the agreement.

"I'll sign it—but on one condition."

I frowned.

"I'm already walking away with nothing. You still have the nerve to negotiate?"

She bit her lip.

"The project you were working on is crucial to the company. If you see it through to completion, I'll sign the divorce papers and promise never to bother you again."

After a brief pause, she added,

"I'll even give you ten percent of the profits."

I considered her words.

"Fine."

At this point, there was no reason to refuse. Besides, I needed the money.

But the moment I agreed, Amanda called someone in.

Ethan.

He strolled in with an all-too-familiar smugness.

"For the duration of this project, Ethan will be your assistant," Amanda announced.

I stared at her for a long moment, then let out a low, mocking laugh.

"Oh? So now I'm supposed to train him for you?"

Amanda averted her gaze, clearly uncomfortable.

"You're leaving. The company needs someone capable to take over."

She hesitated before continuing,

"Ethan graduated from a top university. If you don't deliberately hold back, I'm sure he'll surpass you in no time."

I shrugged, unwilling to waste my breath arguing.

Ethan smirked, stepping closer.

"Mr. Lucas, I look forward to learning from you."

I didn't acknowledge him.

Without another word, I grabbed the project documents and walked away.
