The Sun peeped through the curtains of the Private hospital room. Mariam's lashes flustered open when the sun reflected on her face. Thessa was sitting beside her on the visitor's seat. She had taken the morning off just to be with her.
"How are you feeling now?" Thessa asked worriedly. Mariam gave no reply, her gaze was fixed on the blue ceiling. It looked like the sky.
Nemah had booked a VIP room just for her to stay in so she would feel comfortable. He had to leave early because he had things to deal with so Thessa had to stay with her.
Slowly, the events from last night were becoming clearer and much more sensible now. Her naturally glowing skin was slightly pale. The nurses already changed her dress into a patient's gown making her look more of a patient.
The sick scent of the hospital was making her feel uncomfortable. She felt like leaving there that instant. Her hair was now loose and scattered on the pillow. Her light brown eyes dimmed, it looked so lifeless and even she wasn't responding.
This got Thessa really worried. If she is like this then how would she react when she shares the result with her. She looked at Mariam with pity. A kind of pity she wished she could reverse.
"The doctor said you are fine and we are free to discharge you. Now that you are awake, I'll go and fill your form and get you discharged. I'm late for work already. It's almost afternoon and I've cancelled your flight. In this condition, there's no way I'll let you leave. I've placed an order on what you'll love to eat and..."
" You shouldn't have." She spoke up. Her voice was thicker and hoarse. Her eyes welled up with tears again. " I want to go back home."
Thessa sighed at her stubbornness. "Mimi, you are not feeling too well, you need to rest. The doctor said ...
"Thessa." She called. None of Thessa's words registered in her head. Right now, the two are in different worlds.
"Hmm?"
"Am I a bad person?" She asked as a teardrop rolled down her face to her ears. Thessa shook her head vigorously and held Miriam's hand tight to comfort her.
"Maybe I am. I lost everything just in one night. I could hold myself all throughout that period like a strong lady that no one's arrow can penetrate no matter how sharp. Now, I feel broken." She couldn't hold her tears back as she sniffed uncontrollably
The pain she was feeling was too much, maybe it was real or maybe she was imagining it but it felt like there were thorns in her chest choking her heart multiple times from various angles.
Thessa didn't say anything and let her speak her heart out. Naomi already told her all that had happened last night and to be sincere she felt like killing someone.
"Of all people why does it have to be Maybel Storms, of all people! *Sobs* What if I'm pregnant? My brothers, my sisters and my parents, I don't know how they'll all react. I'm not even married yet. Why do I feel like I am used to it?" She cried more this time. She was scared of how her parents would react. Those people were so damned dangerous.
They won't kill her, yes. But even she isn't sure what they'll do to her yet. Her family was a complex one.
Thessa looked at her gently and spoke reluctantly. " I arrived last night and took permission to run some tests on you, after they confirmed my ID I was allowed under strict supervision and the result confirmed that you are pregnant." She rushed her words at some point before dying slowly. "You are pregnant."
Mariam didn't look shocked, she wasn't even depending on the hospital results. She already knew she was pregnant. Feeling nauseous, dizzy, her monthly flow. Everything just wasn't normal.
It was all affected because she was pregnant, pregnant for a man who cares less about her and how she feels.
"_" Thessa opened her mouth to say something but no words came out. She cleared her throat and attempted again. "Maybe...I think you should talk to him and sort things out. Maybe if he knows you are pregnant he'll reconsider."
Mariam scoffed, that ego and arrogance back like she wasn't down just a few seconds back. "I'm not desperate. Once disposed of, never to be used again. He doesn't need to know anything, there's no way on earth I'll plead with him. " She spoke with so much hatred. Her words were firm and strong, Thessa could only dare to push it once more.
"Give him a chance to explain. He just texted me, he's here but the nurses won't let him in because Nemah said not to."
" He did great, I don't want to see him ." She then turned to the other side of the bed, tears welling up in her eyes. " I don't want to."
" You have to. That's best for now." Thessa stood up and left the room. As she stepped out of the Ward. Henry stood up and faced her.
"How's she?"
At first, she aimed to ignore the young man but she couldn't. At the end of it, all she did was to sigh and give him a sympathetic look. " She's not fine thanks to you." Her look turned to a glare which showed him that she wasn't happy with him and he understood fully well.
Henry scratched his head. " I know, can I see her?"
"As long as you won't hurt her the most." She replied signalling to the security man to let him in. After her business was done, she helped Mariam with her discharge form and left the hospital after phoning Nemah to pick her up.
Henry walked into the ward and was welcomed with Mariam's back. He was sure she didn't want to see him. Slowly, he took silent steps closer till he finally reached the bedside. He shouldn't even be here but he is.
There was some minute of silence between the two as all he did at first was stare at her pale face and dimmed red eyes.
"I'm sorry things had to end this way." He started, watching her closely to see if she would react but she didn't, which annoyed him a little.
He has never seen this side of her before. Although he felt pity for her, he still doesn't expect her to behave like this. After all, she isn't the first person to be dumped by a man.
"I should have told you it couldn't work. I couldn't cope with your distance. You are always here and there, never with me." His bold voice started to explain, he sounded so neutral.
Mariam flinched at his choice of excuse but soon regained composure and continued to stare blankly at the wall.
"The whole time I was involved in an accident, she was with me, she was there for me, taking care of me and you..." He struggled, finding it difficult to say.
"And I wasn't." She cut him off coldly, sitting up. "And the best thing you could do was to cut things off without a proper conversation to voice out how you were dissatisfied with my absence almost every time you needed me."
Henry signed." I didn't intend to do so, it just happened. Not only when I had the accident, she was still there for me when I needed her. She motivates me...I lost it." His voice was becoming weaker as he spoke.
Mariam chuckled bitterly. " She motivates you indeed." She scoffed. " She motivates you out of our love to your selfish desires and then you end up in bed together. Oh please, save me the speech and tell me you haven't done it with her already." No one would miss the self mockery in her tone.
"Mariam." He called slowly, trying to calm her down.
"Mariam? Mariam, that's what you call me now. Mariam." She scoffed.
"Look, she's pregnant and I won't cut things off with her because of you, Mariam." He voiced. " I mean, why are you acting like this? Do you know how annoying you are? I've been coping, I really deserve an award to be with a selfish woman like you."
" Two years! We've been together. Have you ever sat down and thought about what I needed as a man? You were just so selfish. Think about it, the only time we had a kiss on the lip was the day you told me you loved me, all others were just pecks but she gave me her all, everything."
Mariam was dumbfounded. " What!" They did it and now she's pregnant but that night_ she can't remember, the memory is very vague.
Every change she is seeing in him now is assumed to have developed in the two months while she was coming and going like he said! Love doesn't work that way. He had an accident two months ago, right?
"You knew her from the start didn't you?" She couldn't hold in her sobs any longer. "Probably before you even knew me."
"She's my ex."
