Chapter 1 - Hanging

"Dotoman is so cool! I can't wait for the next episode."

"Yeah. I love Prototon so much. He is the best villain in all of comic history."

The warm atmosphere and the smell of fresh leaves outside filled every student with a sense of peacefulness in their classrooms.

Students chatted happily with no worry on their minds whatsoever.

In some classrooms, teachers still taught not letting students go to lunch just yet, much to the students' dismay.

"KYYYAAAAAH!!"

A blood-curdling scream ran through the entire building. Students and teachers were shaken to their core. The students started shouting with wonder about what that scream was all about.

"STAY QUIET!"

"Everyone to their seats right now, no one gets out of the classroom. Devlyn and Martin, come with me." Their teacher said in a serious tone.

Two boys got up from their seats. One had blond hair with blue eyes while another had dark hair and hazel, almost red eyes.

"Of course, the honor student and the student council president were chosen to investigate along with them." A student said in a retired tone.

Some students smiled at this comment but most were still shocked by the scream.

The dark-headed boy asked his teacher, "What happened, sir?"

"I don't know either, Devlyn. Come along, we should head there fast. I have a bad feeling."

The silent Martin did not say anything. They just crossed across their classroom's hallway when they saw another teacher searching for the source of the noise just like them.

"Charles, what was that scream? It was almost inhuman." The teacher said with a pale face.

They went near the roof of the school when they heard murmurs. Some teachers were standing near the rooftop entrance.

They were shaking with fear as they looked at the corpse of a boy who was hanging from a hook right outside the entrance of the rooftop.

Martin felt nauseous as he turned away from the sight. His teacher was also equally shaken looking at the boy.

Devlyn did not say anything but held a troubled expression on his face. Just then, the principal of the school came running to see what had happened.

She too screamed looking at the corpse. Tears fell out of her eyes, as she fell to the floor unconscious.

How could she not, when it was her son's corpse dangling there? The other teachers finally broke out of their trance and tried to wake her up.

One of them called the police on their phone. Devlyn and Martin were rushed back to their class by one of the teachers.

Seeing them back with shocked and terrified faces, the other students questioned them about what had happened.

Martin tried to answer but couldn't. It was Devlyn who answered.

"Craig, Principal Carter's son, is dead."

It was the students' turn to be shocked. They inquired more.

"What do you mean Craig is dead? What really happened?"

Devlyn held an angry face and said in a loud voice, "I don't know! Stop asking me questions!"

No one questioned them further. The classroom was void of all sounds except for murmurs. Fear and panic suffocated the room.

After around 30 minutes, a teacher came into the classroom. None of the students said anything aloud.

The teacher had a pale and sad face as he announced that Craig Carter was found hanging from a rope at the entrance of the school roof.

The students looked at the teacher with fear.

Devlyn was not in fear or shock. He already knew what had happened to Craig.

He looked at one of the girls in his class expectedly. She looked at him with fear as she knew what was coming.

The teacher explained how the authorities had been called in to investigate the incident and all the students were to go home earlier that day.

No student was jubilant even though they got an earlier holiday.

As the students were leaving the school escorted by teachers surveilling them, Devlyn crept out of sight. He went to the rabbit enclosure near their school grounds where the girl was waiting for him.

"Did you get the money?"

She did not say anything and looked incredibly scared.

"Answer me." He said calmly but the menace in his voice was visible.

"I-I still haven't been paid this month yet. I will definitely pay you the money by tomorrow."

"You better do it because you do not want to go to jail for planned murder, do you?"

The girl winced at the statement.

He threw a small SD card at her.

"This contains all the photos and the videos. Destroy this physically."

Devlyn walked away and left the school as well.

'I am bored.' He thought while stifling a yawn. He did not feel any excitement or adrenaline from this incident whatsoever.

As he reached his home, he saw his mother coming home with some groceries.

"Mom, let me help you," Devlyn called out to his mom as he took the shopping bags from her hand.

"Oh, thank you so much, Devlyn."

They entered their home together. Devlyn saw his younger sister sleeping on the couch.

The television was still on and a packet of chips lay on her stomach as she slept.

"Maria! I told you to clean up this mess you made before I came back from shopping. Oh, what will I do with this hopeless girl?"

Maria woke up groggily.

"Mama, it is my holiday today. Let me rest." She complained and raised the packet of chips to see if there were any left.

Devlyn smiled and went to his room upstairs. He thought about the incident today.

'I have taken care of Janice already. She would not dare to tell on me anymore. I should send her a reminder just in case.'

He drafted a letter to her and then fell asleep.
