Chapter 12 - Encounter

The heat of the Ashenwild Expanse was relentless, the volcanic terrain blazing with molten rivers and jagged cliffs. Dawnfyr stood at the base of one such cliff, the fiery glow of the lava illuminating his green vine-like markings. Marcus adjusted Crimson Fang on his back, his eyes fixed on the target for his next grind: Emberclaw Ravagers.

These mobs weren't just tough—they were dangerous. Known for their razor-sharp claws and fiery breath, the Ravagers roamed in small groups near volcanic craters, hunting anything foolish enough to enter their territory. Marcus had done his research, marking their spawn locations on his map, and now he was ready to face them head-on.

"Time to step it up," Marcus muttered, taking a deep breath as he ventured into the Emberclaw's domain.

As Dawnfyr approached the first spawn point, the distant roars of Emberclaw Ravagers echoed through the volcanic ridge. A group of three Ravagers emerged from the smoke, their glowing orange eyes locking onto him. Their scaled bodies shimmered with fiery energy, and their claws left molten streaks across the ground as they charged.

Marcus grinned, unsheathing Crimson Fang. "Let's see what you've got."

The first Ravager lunged, its claws slicing through the air with terrifying speed. Marcus activated Blossom Shield, reducing the incoming damage as he countered with Quick Slash, landing three precise hits on its torso.

Damage Dealt: 75 Physical ATK per strike.

Damage Taken: 25 Physical ATK (reduced by Blossom Shield).

The second Ravager flanked him, its fiery breath scorching the ground as Marcus leapt to the side. Activating Sylvan Strike, Marcus summoned a spectral blade that enhanced his next attack, cleaving through the Ravager's side.

Damage Dealt: 90 Physical ATK + 40 Magic ATK.

Damage Taken: None (dodged attack).

The third Ravager proved trickier, using its molten claws to block Marcus's swings and force him into defensive maneuvers. Frustrated but focused, Marcus activated Verdant Cataclysm, unleashing a wave of roots and thorns that entangled the Ravagers and dealt consistent AoE damage.

Damage Dealt: 120 Magic ATK per target.

Healing Received: +15% HP (forest synergy).

MP Cost: 100 MP.

One by one, the Emberclaw Ravagers fell, their bodies dissolving into fiery ash. A notification popped up:

Experience Gained: 1200 XP.

Marcus checked his HP and MP, noting the strain from the intense battle. "Okay, so these guys aren't playing around," he said, downing a Healing Elixir and a Mana Crystal to recover. "This grind is gonna be rough, but it'll be worth it."

As Marcus prepared to move to the next spawn point, the distant sound of footsteps reached his ears. Dawnfyr turned, his sharp eyes catching sight of another player emerging from the smoky terrain. The figure was tall and imposing, clad in armor that gleamed with fiery runes. Their weapon—a massive hammer infused with molten energy—suggested a fire-based build.

Marcus raised an eyebrow, recognizing the name that appeared above the player's head: Zephyrion, the Flamebeast Slayer.

"Well, well," Marcus muttered, his grin widening. "Looks like I'm not the only one grinding here."

Zephyrion stopped a few paces away, his gaze fixed on Dawnfyr with a mixture of curiosity and caution. "You must be Dawnfyr," he said, his voice deep. "The Cinderstalk Slayer, right?"

Marcus crossed his arms, smirking. "That's me. And you're the Flamebeast Slayer. Guess we've got something in common."

Zephyrion chuckled, resting his hammer on his shoulder. "I've been hunting Emberclaws all morning. They're tough, but the XP's worth it. What about you?"

"Same," Marcus replied. "Trying to pick up another Slayer title."

For a moment, the two players stood in silence, sizing each other up. The tension was palpable, the possibility of conflict hanging in the air. But Marcus, ever the pragmatist, saw an opportunity.

"How about this," he said, breaking the silence. "We split the spawn points. No stepping on each other's toes, and we both get what we want."

Zephyrion considered the proposal, his expression thoughtful. "Fair enough," he said after a moment. "But don't think I'll go easy on you if we cross paths again."

Marcus chuckled, extending a hand. "Deal."

The two players shook hands, the agreement sealed. With a nod of mutual respect, Zephyrion turned and headed toward the northern ridge, leaving Marcus to focus on the southern spawn points.

With Zephyrion out of the picture, Marcus redoubled his efforts, adapting his tactics to handle the Emberclaw Ravagers more efficiently. He began using Blossom Shield and Verdant Cascade to control the battlefield, while relying on Sylvan Strike for high-damage bursts.

Between battles, Marcus took the time to review his gear, noting areas where he could improve his fire resistance. His inventory was packed with potions, crystals, and rare items, but he'd need to make a trip to a settlement soon to upgrade his armor.

"Thistlewood Rest might have what I need," Marcus muttered, marking the neutral settlement on his map. "I'll head there once I finish this grind."

By the end of the day, Marcus had cleared five spawn points, slaying dozens of Emberclaw Ravagers and pushing his XP bar closer to Level 13. The battles were grueling, each encounter testing his endurance and resourcefulness.

As he approached the final spawn point, Marcus activated Verdant Cataclysm one last time, the massive spell tearing through a group of Ravagers and leaving only ash in its wake.

Experience Gained: 1500 XP.

With his body aching and his equipped items depleted, Marcus let out a deep breath, satisfied with his progress. "Not bad," he said, sheathing Crimson Fang. "Now let's see what Thistlewood Rest has to offer."
