Chapter 7 - CHAPTER FIVE

CAFETERIA CHAOS

Walking into the Charterhouse cafeteria was like entering a giant food mall – seriously packed.

"Whoa! They have, like, a million options!" Louisa said, her head swiveling as she checked out all the different food stations.

Ellie was just as hyped. "I didn't know they had so much international stuff!"

The cafeteria was kind of its own world. And just like everywhere else at Charterhouse, there were levels. Upstairs, overlooking everything, was this private lounge area. Only the super-elite kids ate up there. Total VIP zone.

"Scarlet Ivy. She wants us to sit with her," Ellie said, grabbing a tray.

"When did she even tell you that?" Louisa asked, her mouth watering at the sight of the food. She went for pasta and turkey.

They both noticed the prices for some of the fancy food were insane. Good thing their scholarship covered lunch. Free food was a major win.

"We had History together," Ellie explained. "The real problem is finding her in this zoo."

They stood for a sec, watching all the rich kids head to their usual spots, chatting and chowing down. Louisa still felt eyes on her sometimes, thanks to the whole drama from the other night.

Then, across the crazy crowd, Scarlet caught their eye and waved them over to a smaller table by the window, away from the main bunch of popular kids.

"There she is," Ellie said, finally breathing out. And they made their way over to Scarlet.

While they ate, the clinking of cutlery and the murmur of conversations formed a subtle backdrop to Scarlett's quiet explanation.

She reached for her water bottle, the movement delicate, before turning her thoughtful grey eyes towards Louisa.

"You'll soon realize," she began, her voice low and measured, "that Charterhouse operates on a deeply ingrained hierarchy, a tiered system predicated on both lineage and achievement. Think of it as a pyramid, with four distinct layers. At the apex reside the 'First Families,' the super-elite, their wealth immeasurable, granting them access to every conceivable resource. Below them are the established elite, academically gifted but perhaps lacking the sheer financial might of the first tier. Then comes a middle stratum, families of comfortable means, often bolstered by influential alumni connections. And finally," a subtle pause, her gaze softening slightly as it met Louisa's, "there are those of us on scholarship, navigating this world with limited means, constantly aware of the chasm."

Louisa and Ellie absorbed this information, their initial awe of the bustling cafeteria giving way to a stark understanding of the underlying social architecture. A shared look of dawning comprehension passed between them.

"We certainly got a taste of it at the welcome party," Ellie murmured, a frown creasing her brow at the memory.

Scarlett nodded, a hint of caution in her expression. "Honestly, Louisa, while I admired your… spirited reaction to Kora Long, navigating this environment requires a certain finesse. It's often wiser to be strategic, to avoid direct confrontation where possible."

Just then, a palpable shift occurred in the atmosphere of the cafeteria. A hush, subtle yet pervasive, fell over the animated space as Jayden King entered, his usual entourage – the ever-present Ashtray Lewis and the more reserved Jason Kincaid – flanking him.

Their entrance was always a silent spectacle. Hands casually thrust into the pockets of their impeccably tailored trousers, they moved with an almost languid grace towards the staircase leading to the private lounge, their ascent akin to models gracing a runway. Whispers, like a sudden gust of wind, rippled through the student body.

"Those three," Scarlett breathed, her voice barely above a whisper, her gaze following their progress. "They're practically legends in this school."

"Really?" Louisa asked, her attention now fixed on the trio.

She watched as Jayden paused at the railing of the upper lounge, his gaze drifting down, his startling blue eyes, for a fleeting moment, meeting hers. They held a distant, almost vacant quality, offering no discernible emotion. Louisa quickly averted her own gaze, a sudden, inexplicable unease settling within her.

Upstairs, in the exclusive enclave, Cassia sat at a pristine table with Thea and Marcus.

Her sharp, observant eyes followed Jayden's movement, noting the brief, almost imperceptible, connection in his gaze with the scholarship girl below. A flicker of something unreadable – perhaps curiosity, perhaps something sharper – crossed her elegant features.

Lunch was almost over, and Scarlett, Louisa, and Ellie were just chilling, laughing and making fun of Scarlett when Kora Long showed up with her sidekicks, Serena and Chloe.

It wasn't like anyone was actually waiting for her, but everyone knew she was just there to stir stuff up. The three of them strutted over to their usual table, totally making faces when they saw Maya Lim, the school outcast, sitting there.

Maya was shaking bad, and her spoon was practically empty 'cause her hand was all over the place.

"Ugh, look who it is," Serena said, all snarky. "The snitch still has the nerve to sit here."

"I... I earned this seat," Maya mumbled. You could tell she felt bad about whatever she did and probably wanted to be friends again. But with Kora? No chance.

"Nah, sweetie," Kora said, "I bestowed a privilege, one you so carelessly squandered," and then BAM! She slapped Maya, hard.

The sound echoed, and everyone gasped, pulling out their phones to record.

Maya didn't even flinch. It was like she was used to it. She just stayed put, letting Kora rant. She knew if she tried to leave, all the popular kids would just bully her even more.

"Oh, Maya," Kora said slowly, with this creepy laugh. "I thought you were so over being in my shadow."

Then Chloe grabbed Maya, like, super rough, and shoved her onto the floor. Kora grabbed the tray from the table and walked over to her.

Without even thinking, she dumped all the leftover food on Maya. Gross!

"Get your nasty self out of my sight," Kora spat. "Go find some other loser table!" She turned, and her eyes locked with Louisa's, like she was sending a warning.

She gave Louisa this fake, knowing smile and then walked off, Serena and Chloe right behind her.

"Even though what she did was messed up, I kinda feel bad for her," Ellie said, watching Maya on her knees, picking up all the plates and gross food she spilled all over herself and the floor.

Louisa stared at Maya. She finally stood up, holding the tray like she was a zombie or something.

As she walked past a table of guys and then a table of girls, someone stuck their leg out, and Maya totally tripped and fell flat on her face.

Everyone at that table started cracking up, and Louisa just didn't get what was so funny.

Poor Maya. Her uniform was totally ruined and covered in food, and she even had spaghetti in her hair.

Seriously, someone actually called her "spaghetti girl."
