Chapter 9 – The World Begins to Reveal Itself
Adrian puts a hand on his head, dizzy.
— Where am I?
He looks around, confused.
— Cordelia? You're in my house?
— Now can you tell me how you got here? — she asks.
Adrian:
— Who are you? — he asks, looking at the little girl leaning against the wall, who looks about twelve years old.
— Cordelia. I'm the one who saved your life.
Adrian remembers the knights who were struck by that white light before he was thrown by the shockwave.
— So... you're an heir?
Cordelia:
— Yes.
— Then... the inheritance that was here has already been claimed? — Adrian asks in shock.
— Inheritance? So you came here looking for the inheritance? — she asks.
Adrian thinks:
"Can I talk about the inheritance from my parents' journal? She saved my life... and if she wanted to hurt me, she already would've. After all, she's an heir. And most importantly: if the inheritance she has is the one I'm looking for..."
Adrian clenches his teeth and decides to explain why he's there.
Cordelia:
— So your parents' journal talked about this inheritance? You came here without thinking, the very next day after finding the journal? You're an idiot! — she says, shocked.
Adrian:
— I'm just an orphan. Who would I ask for help? And even if I could, I wouldn't tell anyone I have a map to an inheritance. That would only put everyone at the orphanage in danger. This power... it wouldn't protect them. It would put them at risk. I'd rather not have it — Adrian says, his face determined.
Cordelia thinks:
"I'm going to find that inheritance... so you can get better soon. Then you can play with the other kids. Mom will help too..."
Cordelia whispers:
— Idiot...
Adrian:
— Huh? Did you say something?
Cordelia:
— I didn't say anything...
She thinks for a moment and then says:
— How about a deal?
Adrian:
— A deal?
Cordelia:
— Yes. I think the inheritance your parents talked about was a different one, because I've seen those things before, with soldiers guarding a place. If the inheritance you're looking for is in one location, then it must be there. I'll take you... if you help me find my parents. Deal? — she extends her hand.
Adrian:
— Deal.
Cordelia:
— Then rest. Tomorrow we'll look for clues about my parents, first thing in the morning.
Adrian lies on the couch while Cordelia heads to bed.
Adrian thinks:
"Dad... Mom... I'm getting closer to the inheritance..."
He closes his eyes and falls asleep.
