The could feel their hearts pounding in their chest , as they reached the stairs they stopped at the corner and Ben holding his breath took a peek. He pulled back his head and muttered.
" It's clear" and everyone nodded in acknowledgement. They took gentle steps going down the stairs and stopped at every corner checking before they approached. They walked down two set of stairs and didn't encounter any of the infected students, now they had to walk down the hallway. With each step they took their hearts pounded louder, their throat tightened with fear. A class room was up ahead and it's door was unlocked, they stopped in there tracks wondering if they should pass. Felix already knew the infected had bad eye sight so maybe if they walked slowly pass they would be unnoticed.
" Move" Dave said through his teeth getting tired of standing still even though it's hardly been a minute.
He pushed pass the others passing the door and as he did he turned and saw an infected about eight feet away. Dave looked at the infected that strangely stared right back at him or beyond him, or at his soul. Dave could feel fear rising up in him, he heard the others saying they had bad eye sight so why does the infected looking at him made him feel like prey. Dave swallowed and steadily clench the baseball bat he had in hand and stood his ground waiting for any sudden movements. The other students walked up to him and saw the infected student that wasn't moving, a weird smell crossed Felix's nose as he looked up at the infected. Something felt unfamiliar to Felix, he couldn't understand it, but something was wrong. It was obvious the infected was looking at them because as they moved they saw it's eyeball slowly moving within it's socket. They heard growls coming from down the corridor and knew they need to move while the halls were still clear.
The students steadily, but hastily passed by the classroom as Dave still stood in place. When the students passed by he took one last look at the infected before him and walked pass, but no sooner than he turned his back something slammed behind him. They all flung their heads around and saw the infected by the wall. They could feel their bodies shaking even more. The infected stood staring at them, but it wasn't attacking.
Misty took a few steps back and the infected eyes looked unto her watching her movement. Felix slowly realized what was happening, but before he could say anything the infected rushed after her with a loud growl, leaving the others behind. She screamed and started running as her classmates called after her.
" Misty!" Davia shouted not knowing the mistake she just made.
" Wait!" Ben shouted also.
None of them knew the mistakes they were making as the all chased after Misty. Misty kept looking behind her and saw she was only a few steps away from being caught. She looked behind her once again and tripped over a chair that was thrown in the hallway during the commotion. She scraped her leg and fell, but as the infected was about to fall onto her Dave appeared and swung his bat at the infected head hitting it to the side, blood splashed from it and landed on Misty. She was crying and looked terrified as she panicly tried brushing the blood from her.
Davia helped Misty up who was shaking all over. Before they could do anything else a loud crash was heard behind them and even in front of them, their hearts sank and their blood ran cold as they heard the horrific snarls that accompied it. A trail of urine trailed down Misty's leg as she started trembling again, every second that passed the snarls got louder, they could hear the infected getting closer and the sounds they made as if all their vocal cords were damaged. None of them moved standing in fear, the smell of decay slowly mixed in the air. They finally saw a few infected rushing behind them.
" Run" Felix breathed as they saw the infected student pouring from behind them. Moving as fast as they could they ran down the hallway's hardly looking back, they jumped down the stairs to move faster as some of them ran down it. They could hear the infected yearning cries after them, the snarls and growls, the foul scent following as they tumbled and piled on each other down the stairs.
Further in front of them they came face to face with more infected, Ben fell to the ground running backwards on his feet before standing up again. Their breaths were ragged and the were sweating. On both ends were the infected students closing on them as they stood in the middle. Felix looked to the window as a single thought hanged in his head.
" We should jump" Felix said opening the window and looking down, seeing no infected he leaped out landing on the ground with a roll. The landing was painful, but it was better than being eaten he thought. He stood up feeling pain in his body, but that was the least of any problem. The others were stunned at how Felix threw himself through the window without a thought. There was no way they could fight their way through the infected so they decided to jump. While the others were contemplating whether to fight or flight Davia jumped through the window.
Seeing someone else throw themselves out the window gave the others courage and they followed. They landed on the floor rolling and hissing in pain, a few scrapes bruised onto their bodies, but they didn't notice as the only thing their minds could process was creating a gap between them and the infected. They hurriedly stood up knowing they couldn't waste time. They slowly dragged themselves around school grounds, hiding like the prey they now were. They were at one side of the school, walking close to the walls and having the flower bushes as a shield. They looked across the school ground seeing they would have to make a run for it, they would have to wait for the perfect time and then run. Felix voiced his thoughts saying they should run straight across and into the building. He was never someone who voiced his thoughts and would most likely only speak when spoken to, but since this unusual outbreak the situations he had encountered brought light to a different side of him. He didn't feel all that comfortable with his new traits, but it was hard to ignore.
Davia hated how her brother was giving orders one after the other and had them following, she then suggested something different opposing her brother.
"Why don't we stay close to the walls and try to get around the building" she said as a statement rather than a question.
"No that might take longer and we don't know how many infected will be there and if we are seen we would be cornered" Felix responded hardly giving her suggestion a thought. Davia glared at the back of his head as he stumped over her words so easily, as if he was showing he was better than her, as if he was some sort of leader and she was his subordinate. Davia clenched her teeth at her brother's sudden boldness, normally he was so quiet, but now he was different and the thought made her skin itch in anger.
" Well I'm not coming" Davia said with full disagreement . He came into her life and not the other way around, she should always be ahead.
" I agree with the girl" Dave said in a low tone, while his eyes scanned for an opening. Davia felt a feeling of triumph over her brother as most people were in agreement with her. Misty was her friend and would definitely go along with her, then there's Dave who also agreed and her.
Felix looked at the three students who had made up their minds to follow Davia, but Felix didn't care saying he was still going to run across. Davia felt irritated by Felix, but she didn't want a thought of him on her mind so she ignored him.
"I'm going to run on three" Felix said before counting to three and dashed forward with Ben on his heels.
As Felix and Ben ran forward they came into view of the infected and was now being chased. Using both boys as a decoy Davia lead the way remaining to the walls and bushes. She moved with caution, but when she stuck her head around the corner, there were a few infected wondering.
Felix and Ben ran with all their might at full speed as the infected wasted no time eating up the steps they left behind. They pushed through the doors making their way to the first set of stair, luckily so far there weren't any infected. They went up the second set of stairs and there they spotted the broadcasting room. They felt a sense of satisfaction swirl through them as they reached the door and pulled the handle, but it wouldn't open. There hearts sank as they pulled on the door repeatedly but to no avail, the idea of the door being locked never crossed anyone's mind. The steps and cries of the infected students were getting louder with each passing time. Ben then grew frustrated as he kicked the door causing Felix's heart to jump, he had made it so far and didn't want to accept defeat. Felix could understand Ben's frustration, but despite that making any loud noise was the worst thing to do. They were caught in a building with the enemy gaining on one side and the other path uncertain.
Davia tried to control her breathing as she pulled her head back into hiding.
" They're there" Davia whispered referring to the infected students.
" Can we pass or is there like some sort of way?" Dave questioned behind her and she didn't answer. Misty suddenly started to feel extremely anxious for unknown reasons.
" I think we should go back" she muttered softly with fear in her voice. They didn't respond to her so she repeated her words once more a bit louder and again she got no response. With her shaking body she slowly started stepping back. Suddenly the most terrifying sound was heard, the world went silent as their hearts forgot to beat and every sound was drowned out expect for the sound of the bell that penetrated the air.
