Linde controlled his expression and shifted his focus away from the official website.
He had always thought that his special ability would be something extraordinary, but it turned out... to be just a website!
This was a game world!
The bad news was that he couldn't grind monsters for levels and there was no system.
The good news was that he could still access the official website, although it seemed to serve no real purpose for now.
The soldiers around him did not believe White Silk Lover 's words, and one soldier quietly remarked, "The Circle of Magic has shattered; how could there still be gods?"
"Sir, why not just kill him?" Leo suggested decisively. "He has an unknown background and looks hideous; he might be related to those monsters."
"Damn, hell mode! If I had known NPCs were all about looks, I wouldn't have bothered," White stockings Lover muttered under his breath, but most people dismissed him as a madman, paying no attention to the incomprehensible ramblings.
Linde stared at White stockings Lover's face, pondered for a moment, and asked, "You say you are a knight guided by the divine, ready to save the world?"
As he spoke, he instinctively began role-playing. Regardless, as an NPC, maintaining proper demeanor was not only for the sake of deceiving players later but also for providing better service.
"That's right!" White stockings Lover nodded, looking at Linde with anticipation. It was an intense feeling—based on years of gaming experience, he sensed that a quest was coming!
"Then the revelation I sensed in my dreams last night must be about you," Linde said calmly, fabricating an imaginary dream for himself.
Talking about divine revelations came easily to him, stemming from the elegance of the nobility of Goliath in the Golden City, along with the commanding presence of a soldier. This filled him with an aura that players must respect. Not to mention, he was quite the actor; before his transmigration, he had won the 'Small Performance King' award at his company's annual meetings for five consecutive years.
In short, to the players, he would appear as an NPC.
White stockings Lover quickly nodded, "That's right! It's me, without a doubt!"
Linde said seriously, "The Circle of Magic has shattered, and the embers of life are about to extinguish. In my dream, I heard the whispers of the gods; a traveler from afar will help us rekindle the flame!"
The soldiers looked on in slight disbelief; could such a thing really exist?
They glanced back at White stockings Lover and wondered if this was what a divine messenger looked like.
White stockings Lover nodded repeatedly, accepting the role with ease and even puffing out his chest.
"If you truly are the one the gods spoke of, then you should be able to help us," Linde said in a somewhat formulaic manner. "To be frank, we have encountered a small problem. A pack of wolves has been attacking travelers nearby, and we are suffering from their disturbances."
The soldiers were completely puzzled. What did the lord mean? What an awkward transition! Why did he suddenly believe this ugly fellow? And the wolf attacks… were we not supposed to be hunting the wolves but unable to catch them?
However, the words fell on White stockings Lover's ears quite differently.
Awkward? No, no, no, this is perfectly normal!
"I can go eliminate those wolves!" White stockings Lover exclaimed, standing up excitedly. He was ready to shout, "I'm here to work, let me at it!"
The soldiers exchanged strange looks. Yes, those wolves were indeed their target, but they were tough to deal with—quick, always acting in packs, and adept at ambushes.
No one wanted to get injured during this time of scarcity; injuries could mean a slow death.
Could this guy, so weak in appearance, really take on the wolves? Even if he managed to kill one, he would likely lose an arm, and his only fate would be a dead end.
White stockings Lover cleared his throat and bowed, saying, "My lord, please believe me. Helping those in need is my mission for coming to this world! I am ready to embrace the darkness!"
If one were to overlook the unusual face that reflected the unique aesthetics of soul-linked players, the flamboyant green hair, and his dialogue that had a translated tone, Linde could barely admit that he resembled a knight in some way.
He guessed that the other party thought of himself as a fixed-line NPC, speaking freely and openly without holding anything back—saying whatever came to mind.
The identity of an NPC wasn't too bad; at least it offered a layer of protection, unlike being a red-named monster.
Linde nodded, "If you can truly hunt the wolves and prove your identity, I will allow you to temporarily reside at the Star Dragon Watchtower and provide you with assistance."
White stockings Lover Silk hurriedly asked, "Can you tell me where the wolves have been spotted?"
"Of course," Linde nodded and pointed, saying, "Go straight ahead, toward the Withered Woods. If you hold your breath and listen closely, you should be able to hear the wolves howling."
But there was a possibility that he might not find anything, a thought Linde kept to himself.
He knew the wolf den was deep in the Withered Woods, but he had never planned to venture that far; it wasn't hunting, and the watchtower couldn't afford any injuries. They had a little bit of medicine, but they couldn't afford to lose manpower.
The expressions of the soldiers changed again. Did the lord take this person as a knight of the gods? It seemed like they were treating him as bait for the wolves instead. However, they said nothing, as everything revolved around the lord's orders.
"Yes, I'm going right away!" White stockings Lover exclaimed excitedly and immediately rushed out of the cave.
The hole in the city wall got larger as he squeezed through.
"My lord, this..."
The soldiers couldn't bring themselves to believe in the so-called knight of the gods. After the Circle of Magic shattered, the gods had gone silent.
Besides, if he truly intended to hunt the wolves, he didn't even have a weapon or proper clothing; he was simply asking for death.
"Leo, Riff, Reed! You three follow him from a distance," Linde instructed. "Pay attention to everything that happens to him."
Indeed, the lord had no faith that the other party was a knight of the gods.
"Yes!"
The three soldiers readied their crossbows and arrows, squeezing through the wall hole. Their armor scraped against the opening, and stones clattered down from above.
Linde: ...
He suddenly felt like kicking these three fools.
Sighing, Linde said, "Let's patch up the hole first."
If there was a large opening in the wall, who knew what might crawl in at night? He inspected the claw marks around the broken wall, feeling a sense of worry; the wall hadn't been torn down by an ordinary beast.
A group of people busily moved several stones and used shovels to fill in some dirt, finally managing to block the hole, albeit not very securely. They would have to think of a better solution later.
Meanwhile, Leo and the others had already returned.
"How did it go?" Linde asked.
"They're dead," Leo replied, his expression strange. The other two wore similar looks, as if they had witnessed something bizarre and terrifying.
Linde had a suspicion, but he still asked, "Where are the bodies?"
"They disappeared."
"Explain what happened in detail," Linde instructed.
"That strange man," Leo recalled, "kept running towards the Withered Woods and just happened to encounter a pack of wolves. He picked up a stick and charged at them, and then he was bitten to death. He was moving too fast, and we were too far away to help. Before he went, he said..."
"What did he say?"
"Dog Fuel King."
