Chapter 23 - Pawn 1

Wang Yu paced quietly under the dim candlelight, his brows furrowed, lost in a whirlpool of thoughts. The problems swirled around his mind like a gathering storm unrelenting and dangerous. His thoughts inevitably drifted to the Feng Clan, and a sharp glint flickered in his eyes.

"I cannot kill that Feng Clan member," he murmured to himself. "The best I can do is maintain the stalemate. But if I choose inaction, the Patriarch might see it as defiance. In the worst case, he may even cripple me as punishment."

A sigh escaped his lips heavy, resigned. The fate hanging above him was cruel, and he knew it. Yet amid the gloom, a peculiar thought surfaced.

"But why hasn't that Feng Clan brat made a move yet? Why hasn't he sought trouble with me? Could something have gone wrong?"

Perplexed, Wang Yu narrowed his eyes. Something didn't add up. He turned toward his most trusted follower and gave a calm yet firm order.

"Send word to the governor. I want accurate information about this newcomer from the Feng Clan. Leave no detail unchecked."

A week passed, and soon, a sealed letter landed in Wang Yu's hands. As he unfolded it and read its contents, his confusion only deepened.

"What's wrong with this Feng Clan guy?" he thought, his face darkening. "Could it be that we're both being used? That our respective Patriarchs have plotted against us throwing us into this godforsaken place to tear each other apart?"

His eyes gleamed with unease, the weight of realization pressing heavily on him. He needed a plan not just to survive, but to navigate the growing web of schemes surrounding him. The internal affairs of the Wang Clan were already a mess, and now even the Patriarch seemed to be pulling hidden strings.

Wang Yu had always been a rational man. He understood when to advance and more importantly, when to retreat. He saw the danger he was in with a clarity most warriors lacked.

Yet, as his thoughts swirled, a bolder idea crept into his mind dangerous, but not without merit.

"Since we are both pawns, both carrying grudges against our Patriarchs why not form an alliance?"

The idea tempted him for a moment, but reality quickly brought him back.

"No the Patriarch's methods are far too meticulous. His network of spies is vast. I don't even know how many he has watching me right now."

Meanwhile, beyond the border, deep within the Feng Clan's domain, another figure stood in quiet contemplation Feng Ming.

Word had already reached him of Wang Yu's arrival.

"So, Grandfather has colluded with the Wang Clan," Feng Ming thought, his expression unreadable. "But how? If the Wang Patriarch knew my grandfather is a cultivator above the Fifth Heaven, there's no way he'd allow him to swallow my entire foundation alone. He would demand half. This deal offers no real benefit."

The thoughts gnawed at him, and then something else struck him like lightning.

"It's been days. That Wang Clan member has been just like me not even patrolling the border, let alone taking action."

A bold, chilling possibility came to mind.

"Could it be, he's just a pawn sent by the Wang Patriarch? Sent here with one mission: to kill me and die alongside me?"

He paused, his gaze turning cold. "But what could Feng Shui have offered him in exchange? What would make someone accept such a fate?"

His eyes flickered in the candlelight, and he whispered to himself, "I need to wait."

Ten years passed like a fleeting dream.

And now, Feng Ming stood before a weathered scroll, reading the report of the last decade. His mind churned with thoughts, sharper and more dangerous than ever before.

The game between the two clans was far from over.
