Chapter 2 - A Taste of Fear

An old shabby house comes into view, finally we're home. I'm so tired, this has been my first expedition outside after all. I remember when i was smaller, my mom and dad telling me about the world before the apocalypse. Telling me about lush overgrown structures with creatures crawling in them.

I was so fascinated with the stories of the outside world, the stories of the old civlization and the adventures that my dad had.

....

We enter into the house, the old wooden door creaking, the counters being covered in dust. The wallpaper being ripped and stained, it's good to be home.

The house has 3 rooms, one where my parents sleep, one where me and my sister sleep, and the bathroom, even though it doesn't really work anymore.

I crash onto my bed exhausted, my muscles aching. I've never been so happy before, finally being on an expedition. I hear a knock near the door, i look over and it's my dad smirking.

"So...how are you feeling?"

With a tired yet happy look on my face, I keep laying down exhausted on the bed.

"It was awesome, I never thought it would be just how you described it. Even the creatures... I've never been so far away from my house before."

"See? It was just how I told you it was"

My dad chuckled happily

"Though why did we take Maya? I had to wait till I was 15 to go on an expedition, but my sister is much younger then me. Why did you take her with you?"

My dad pondered for a bit looking like he's searching for answer

"Hmmm well, we can't leave your sister alone at the house defenceless, can we?"

I think for a bit before just brushing it off

"Fine fine whatever you're right"

My dad chuckled lightly before walking away.

...

The night approached. In just a few moments it became pitch black outside, like there would be a curtain over the windows. You could hear slight rustling from the trees and the bushes outside, not knowing if it was the wind or a wanderer making that noise.

*Thud*

I woke up at the dead of night, barely even able to see if it wouldn't be for the moon illuminating my surroundings, though i can hear a vague storm coming.

What was that noise? It sounded like something fell over. My aching body sluggishly moved out of bed still sleepy going over to the noise.

"Mom? Dad?"

....Its all quiet. The stillness in the air, it felt like somethings wrong. The quietness is almost deafening if it wasn't for the wind making the house creak. As my eyes got adjusted to the darkness, i saw a strange figure in the dark. It looked similar to my father...but wrong. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? I cant make him out in this darkness, yet when I blinked, the shadow was suddenly gone.

My body froze in place. What was that? A barrage of questions assaulted my mind until a sound from the bathroom stopped my thinking. It sounded like my dog whimpering.

I ran to the bathroom, with a constant feeling of anxiety. As I opend the door, the whimpers stopped, replaced by silence.

I look all over the bathroom and landed my eyes on the floor, a pool of blood left right in the middle of the bathroom without any traces of a body. I hesitantly moved to it, to get a closer look at it until I felt a drip of blood on my head from above me.

A chill went down my spine, I felt frozen.

The blood was still warm. I looked up above me and saw something I shouldn't have.

It looked similar to my dad, yet it looked wrong. It smiled wickedly towards me, the creatures skin looking discoloured. Its sharp fingers felt like they could pierce right through me. Its limbs being 2 times longer then a persons, its jaw looking like it could easily fit my head, being able to bite it off with ease. The creature opens it's mouth revealing its razor sharp teeth and throws up the body of my mother and dog. They're barely recognizable anymore...

"Mom..."

I look up again and... its gone.

'where is it, no no no this cant be. There's no way my moms dead....'

I hear a sound coming from our bedroom, my sister's still sleeping there. I have to protect her.

I run out of the bathroom, opening up the old door to our bedroom. It creaks quietly in the silence, my heart pounding so hard, that my head feels like its pulsating. I muster up the courage and look inside...
