Chapter 8 - Vanishing Completely

Although the Chief Eunuch repeatedly urged the emperor to leave Consort Bai to her physicians and maids, both the emperor and Mei spent the night watching over her; the emperor dismissed the eunuch's concerns while Mei observed his worried demeanour.

Mei pondered over what the evil ghosts said during the day before being dragged out of the palace by Ling'er and from that, then Mei could guess the evil ghost had been doing this for a while.

Since she had come to the palace, she had seen no baby in the palace, and before she passed away, she had about the famous rumours about the emperor birthing dead sons, the emperor had a prince and a princess born from the empress turns out it was the evil ghost sucking the soul out any child.

She felt sorry for all the women who lost babies as she knew how hard it was to carry full term and not have your baby, and also, the emperor looked very dejected.

She didn't know why, but the ghost must have had a vengeance against the emperor.

Knowing no ghost can bridge Consort Bai's chambers, Mei left to go look for Ling'er, as she needed to find out what was going on with her.

She floated out of the to find Ling'er floating around the bedchamber so she went to her side to let her know of the consorts situation she also asked what happened with the evil spirit and Ling'er informed her what she had learned which shocked Mei the evil ghost was one of the emperor's concubines who died while giving birth and has been haunting the palace since then believing that she was one of the women in the harem was behind it.

Her husband and his concubine also killed Mei so she could understand how hard it must have been for the other ghost, but under no circumstances would she kill their kids so that she could avenge them. She also didn't understand why the ghost would be involved in others. Who did nothing to her in her vengeance, especially unborn children.

She asked Ling'er to monitor the ghost and make sure she could not step near Consort Bai's bed-chamber and went back to check on the consorts and the baby, not knowing that was the last time she would see Ling'er as a ghost.

Going back, the emperor was still there with his head in his hand. He looked very tired, so Mei sat at the edge of the bed to monitor the baby's situation. The consort had to be awake by the following day, or both she and the baby would be at risk.

In the middle of the night consort, Bai showed no chances of improvement as she lay there face deathly pale and motionlessly. The emperor instructed his eunuch to call all the imperial physicians that were in the palace, and while awaiting the physicians, he paced up and down. Mei could guess that he was more worried about the baby as his palace was full of women. She didn't think he cared enough for the consort.

Not awhile after, the physicians arrived, and he commanded them to check the consort's pulse, and they did one by one. No one had the solution and cure for the consorts, but one thing was for sure: the consort had to wake up before sunrise, or both she and the baby would be at a huge risk.

Mei spent the entire night with her hands on the consort's belly, feeling the kicks of the baby, and as the morning approached, the kicks started getting weaker, increasing Mei's fear and panic.

As the morning sun peered in the room, the haggard emperor instructed his eunuch to dismiss the court this morning and inform all the women in the harem not to come for a visit.

Outside, in the bedchamber, Mei could hear the maids sobbing, and the atmosphere was sombre. Mei didn't know what to do, so she kept her hands on her stomach to feel the small flatters of kicks compared to the strong kick the baby was giving her the previous.

Mei felt a sense of unease creeping upon her something bad was going to happen she had always had this type of feeling before and ignored it which got her killed but now despite knowing something bad was to happen she had no way and doing anything so she closed her eyes to pray for the safety of both the baby and the mother.

She had been watching for the baby for only three nights, but she already felt so close to it. The baby tugged at her heartstrings and her maternal instinct. She felt all the feelings she had felt when she was pregnant in just three days, and she blamed herself for leaving. If only she had stayed back instead of roaming the capital, the baby and the mother would have been okay.

The emperor summoned the physicians who were now staying at the door and then came into the chamber, and the result was actually worse and Mei realised she hadn't felt the flutter for a while now.

She felt her breathing constricting and started shouting as she put both her hands on the stomach of the consorts, but nothing changed.

Closing her eyes, she started to pray but felt nothing, no kicks, and she sobbed, shouting for the baby to kick. She sensed a small vibration, thinking it was a kick, but her hands started becoming transparent, and she started at it dumbly, not knowing what was going on.

And it started moving upwards. She was disappearing, which made her extremely disappointed. All she wanted after her death was to protect this baby, but she felt like a failure as she couldn't protect anyone, not her baby, this baby or even herself, as she stared regretfully as she slowly vanished.

In the moment she disappeared completely, her mind was filled with nothing but a desperate wish that the baby would be safe.
