Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Into the Depths

Ethan and Seraphina stood amidst the eerie silence of the dungeon, their momentary truce lingering in the charged air. The dim glow of mana-infused crystals embedded in the walls provided the only illumination, casting long, wavering shadows across the cracked stone floors. Deeper within, the dungeon pulsed with unseen threats, an unspoken challenge beckoning them forward.

Ethan flexed his fingers, rolling his shoulders as he glanced at Seraphina. "If you're tagging along, try not to slow me down."

Seraphina smirked. "I should be saying that to you, F-rank."

He chuckled, shaking his head before stepping forward. They had wasted enough time.

A Deadly Alliance

They navigated through the winding tunnels, their senses sharp for any sign of danger. The deeper they ventured, the heavier the air became, thick with the oppressive aura of something sinister waiting ahead.

Ethan's instincts flared. He halted abruptly, raising a hand. Seraphina followed suit, her grip tightening around the hilt of her blade.

Something was coming.

Without warning, the walls trembled, dust and debris cascading from above. A guttural growl echoed through the cavern, the unmistakable sound of a beast stirring from its slumber. Then, from the darkness, a massive form emerged—a hulking, six-eyed monstrosity with jagged obsidian-like scales and razor-sharp claws.

Seraphina whistled. "Well, that's ugly."

Ethan's jaw tightened. The beast's glowing red eyes fixated on them, hunger evident in its gaze.

Dungeon Boss: Abyssal Devourer

Its name appeared in the system overlay, a chilling reminder of the challenge before them.

The Battle Begins

The Abyssal Devourer lunged, the ground quaking beneath its charge. Ethan barely managed to sidestep, feeling the rush of displaced air as the beast's claw tore through the space he had occupied a moment before. Seraphina was already moving, her blade flashing in the dim light as she struck.

The creature roared as her attack connected, but its hide was unnaturally resilient, the impact barely leaving a scratch. Seraphina clicked her tongue in irritation. "That's going to be a problem."

Ethan didn't hesitate. He activated Iron Stride, feeling his movements sharpen as he closed the distance, aiming for its legs. His fist connected, the force rippling through his arm, but the beast barely staggered.

The Devourer retaliated with a backhanded swipe, catching Ethan mid-dodge and sending him crashing into the dungeon wall. Pain exploded across his back, but he gritted his teeth and forced himself up.

Seraphina wasn't idle. She leapt onto the beast's back, her blade glowing with dark energy as she plunged it into the gap between its scales. The Abyssal Devourer howled in rage, thrashing violently, trying to shake her off.

Ethan used the moment of distraction. His body burned with exertion, but he ignored it, charging forward once more. He ducked beneath the beast's swinging tail, launching himself upward with every ounce of strength he had.

His fist, coated in sheer force, slammed into the side of the Devourer's skull. A sickening crack echoed through the dungeon as the creature stumbled, its balance momentarily lost.

Seraphina seized the opening, her blade slicing clean through the beast's throat.

A final gurgling roar escaped the Abyssal Devourer before it collapsed, shaking the ground as it fell. Silence returned to the dungeon, save for the heavy breathing of the two warriors standing victorious.

A Moment of Rest

Seraphina flicked her blade clean before sheathing it. "You're not as useless as people say."

Ethan snorted. "And you're not as much of a spoiled noble as I expected."

She arched an eyebrow. "Careful. That almost sounded like a compliment."

He smirked but said nothing. They both knew this was only the beginning. Deeper within the dungeon, greater dangers awaited.

For now, though, they had survived.

And survival was all Ethan needed.
