Chapter 42: The Awakening of the Triple Jade Green Flower Pupils
"Hiss !!"
A sharp, piercing hiss suddenly echoed as a massive pillar of molten lava erupted from the lava sea, blasting toward Lu Bu at an angle. Beneath the surface of the lava, a pair of blood red beastly eyes flickered, filled with rage and murderous intent.
"Just what I was waiting for!"
Lu Bu's eyes flashed with brilliance as he abruptly turned and struck downward with his palm, unleashing a surge of soul power that transformed into a massive invisible hand.
Boom!
The explosion reverberated through the cavern as the soaring lava pillar collided with the unseen barrier, shattering into countless fiery droplets that sprayed outward like a violent storm.
With a roar, Lu Bu sent the enormous soul formed hand crashing down, pressing against the lava pillar and grasping at the Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent below.
"Hiss hiss hiss !!"
The serpent, sensing the restraint on its body, let out a furious screech, its muscular form twisting and struggling violently.
At the tunnel's exit, Hai Bodong stood with his palms emitting a chilling frost, his expression tense as he observed the battle between Lu Bu and the serpent. The sheer pressure from Lu Bu's soul power and the serpent's lava attacks made even Hai Bodong feel uneasy.
The latter, especially, posed a considerable threat. Ice and fire were natural opposites whichever was stronger would overwhelm the other entirely. In this environment, facing the serpent would be no small challenge for him.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Explosions echoed as the molten lava splattered everywhere. Lu Bu's face darkened. The serpent's slippery body was proving to be difficult to hold his soul power grip was loosening!
"Trying to run?" Lu Bu bellowed. He attempted to pull the serpent out of the lava while simultaneously forming a sharp spike of soul energy in his left hand, which shot straight into the serpent's body with a sharp whistle.
"Hiss !!"
The serpent screamed in pain, but its body suddenly radiated a bright red glow. Lava began to seep through the gaps in its scales, and with a violent twist, it slipped out of Lu Bu's soul powered grip and dove back into the lava sea.
Splash!
The molten lava splashed upward as the Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent vanished into the fiery depths, leaving no trace behind.
Lu Bu's expression turned grim. It had managed to escape!
Back at the tunnel exit, Hai Bodong let his condensed Dou Qi dissipate as he sighed in frustration. "What a pity," he muttered. This molten beast was clearly a tough opponent. Judging from the residual energy of its attacks, its strength wasn't below his own current level around the Dou Spirit stage.
"Damn it…" Lu Bu cursed under his breath. The serpent was proving to be as slippery as it was infuriating.
Now what? Lu Bu frowned, his mind racing. Finding the Green Lotus Core Flame's lotus platform and seeds depended entirely on this serpent, the "local guide" of the lava sea. Searching for the lotus flower on his own would be akin to finding a needle in an ocean of molten rock.
As Lu Bu pondered his next move, he suddenly felt four intense, hateful gazes directed at him from below.
Lu Bu raised an eyebrow slightly. Holding a grudge, huh?
But this was actually good news it meant there was still a chance to catch the serpent. After a moment's thought, Lu Bu slowly flew toward the distant end of the lava sea, deliberately exposing his back to the serpent below.
His wings trembled lightly as he hovered, his movements casual, as if completely unconcerned.
A few breaths later, the feeling of being watched disappeared, and the hateful gazes vanished. That peculiar sense of being observed was gone.
"Strange…" Lu Bu muttered to himself. He continued his baiting tactic, creating even bigger openings in his defenses.
Then, without warning, Lu Bu's body stiffened. In the original story, this beast was known for holding grudges it wouldn't just give up after being attacked. However, it was also cunning and knew how to avoid unnecessary risks. So…
Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle!
Just as the thought crossed his mind, the sound of lava churning rapidly grew louder. The Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent shot out from the molten sea like an arrow, heading straight for the platform where Hai Bodong and Qing Lin were standing.
"You sly beast!"
Lu Bu's gaze turned icy as he cursed, his Purple Cloud Wings flapping powerfully. A sonic boom echoed as he transformed into a black streak, racing toward Hai Bodong and Qing Lin.
…
At the tunnel's exit, Qing Lin, who had been nervously watching the fight, finally breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Lu Bu gaining the upper hand against the serpent.
"Don't worry, your Young Master is quite powerful," Hai Bodong said, glancing at Qing Lin. Initially, he had thought Lu Bu only brought this young maid along because he disliked relying on an old man like him. But now… well, he no longer believed that.
Along the journey, Qing Lin had proven far more useful than Hai Bodong himself, even though he was a former Dou Emperor and a map expert. Without him, Lu Bu still could have relied on Qing Lin to navigate this far with ease.
"Where on earth did that brat find this girl?" Hai Bodong muttered, his expression growing more serious. The more he observed Qing Lin, the less he understood her and Lu Bu as well.
Qing Lin, oblivious to Hai Bodong's thoughts, kept her gaze fixed on the lava sea. The serpent seemed to have disappeared… but then again, maybe it hadn't.
"Ugh… if only I could help Young Master," Qing Lin murmured through gritted teeth, frustrated by her inability to contribute.
Suddenly, her expression shifted, and a loud explosion erupted as the enormous Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent burst out of the lava.
"Watch out!"
Hai Bodong shouted, summoning an ice spear in an instant. The spear, sharp and deadly, flew toward the serpent's gaping maw like a venomous snake striking its prey.
The freezing cold wind howled as the ice spear shot forward, powerful enough to kill the serpent in one blow.
Hai Bodong knew full well that this beast was beyond stopping with mere defenses. The only option was to attack its weak points, forcing it to retreat and buying time for Lu Bu to return.
However, the Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent had two heads. While one head unleashed a fire pillar to intercept Hai Bodong's ice spear, the other lunged forward, its massive jaws snapping toward Qing Lin.
The serpent's fangs gleamed coldly, its rancid breath filling the air as its jaws closed in. In its beady eyes, a glimmer of vengeful delight shone.
"Ah !!"
Qing Lin's face went pale as she screamed. She had never faced such a terrifying sight, and her instincts betrayed her, leaving her frozen in fear.
At the same time, a faint yellow light radiated from the jade token around her neck the protective array Lu Bu had given her activated just in time.
As Qing Lin's scream echoed, her emerald eyes suddenly began to change. Slowly, three small green flowers appeared within her pupils.
The moment the green flowers emerged, a strange light burst from her eyes, enveloping the Twin Headed Flame Spirit Serpent entirely.
The serpent's body stiffened in mid air, frozen in place as if time had stopped.
The eerie green light quickly condensed, forming two tiny green flower marks on each of the serpent's heads.
From a distance, Lu Bu abruptly halted mid flight, momentarily stunned. Ah, I forgot! He suddenly remembered the suppressive effect of Qing Lin's Triple Jade Green Flower Pupils on snake type magical beasts. It had completely slipped his mind!
