Chapter 39 - 39. The Bet

The night before the third trial.

Ezric and I stood in the back alley of the inn, far from anyone's eyes. The faint sound of music from a nearby tavern drifted through the air, but neither of us was in a relaxed mood.

"Nothing?" I whispered.

Ezric shook his head, his face tense. "Velya can't be reached. Left no trace. My contacts don't know where she is either. I think she's busy in Thronshade."

"So... no disguise stone for the third trial?" My voice pitched up.

"None." He looked at me seriously. "And the final trial is tomorrow. In public. In front of the King and nobles—maybe even... Sylas. Kaelith."

My heart dropped to my stomach. I clenched my hair in frustration. "If they see me... if my disguise fails—"

"You'll be capture. Or worse."

We fell silent. Only the wind answered, carrying with it a shadow of fear.

"Any other options?" I whispered. "Illusion potion? Cloak? Magic mask?"
