Elena narrowed her eyes. Eleanor knew exactly what she was doing. She was clever—deceptively so. She never said anything directly, just enough to tarnish Elena's image subtly.
She was trying to discredit her, to bring up Elena's past with the Cross family and imply that her personal life had been reckless.
Camilla Vaughn, standing nearby, didn't look pleased. "Elena, I heard you separated from the Cross family a while back. Why are you still calling her your mother?"
Elena threw a cold glance at Eleanor and said with an icy smile, "My biological mother passed away a long time ago. As for the Cross family, I haven't lived under their roof for years. I've been on my own. I'm not sure what this Mrs. Cross thinks she's talking about."
She had long severed ties with Theodore Cross, her so-called father. And Eleanor, the stepmother, had no right to speak for her.
