"You can choose one Pokémon egg from here, or I can exchange it for 30 million Pokédollars in breeding funds. It's up to you," Brock said.
After finishing their meal, Brock led Silas to the incubation room to select a Pokémon egg.
In general, talented independent trainers, aside from receiving support from the Joy family, would at most form investment agreements with two or three other factions.
This was because different factions had alliances and conflicting interests. If a trainer accepted too many investments, they could end up in a situation where they were forced to take a neutral stance during conflicts or even be caught in internal disputes.
No faction wanted to provide resources for free without gaining something in return, so an unspoken rule was established to prevent excessive overlap in sponsorships.
Silas had agreed to Pewter Gym's investment only after careful investigation and analysis.
As one of the oldest and most powerful of Kanto's eight official Gyms, Pewter Gym was an excellent choice.
After all, Viridian Gym was led by Giovanni, while Cerulean Gym was on the decline, making their investments more cautious. Vermilion Gym had a poor reputation and was considered relatively weak.
Celadon Gym mainly supported female trainers, Fuchsia Gym required knowledge of ninjutsu, Saffron Gym only invested in psychics or trainers with Psychic-type Pokémon, and Cinnabar Gym's leader, Blaine, was known for his eccentric personality.
Considering all these factors, Pewter Gym was the most reasonable option.
Furthermore, Silas possessed a special ability, and with the combined support of the Joy family and Pewter Gym, he would have enough resources to navigate the early stages of his journey.
This was precisely why he chose to visit Pewter City first otherwise, taking a ship directly to Cerulean City or Vermilion City would have been just as viable.
On top of providing standard support, Pewter Gym also offered Silas a high-potential Pokémon egg or 30 million Pokédollars in funding, along with the necessary materials and qualifications to take the Breeder Certification Exam.
The restrictions were minimal. In return, Silas would be expected to provide assistance to Pewter Gym in the field of breeding in the future, as well as complete a set number of tasks each year. Compensation for these tasks would be paid as usual.
Silas carefully examined the Pokémon eggs in the incubation room and found something odd.
All of them had Advance-level potential, but they were all common Ground- and Rock-type Pokémon Geodude, Diglett, Sandshrew, Cubone, and similar species.
There wasn't a single rare Pokémon in sight, which didn't seem equivalent to the 30 million Pokédollars in funding.
"All of these eggs have been tested and confirmed to have Advance-level potential. If you like any of them, you're free to choose one.
But of course, these aren't the only ones available we're not that stingy," Brock said, noticing Silas' puzzled expression.
With that, he swiped his ID card against a reader, unlocking a small door in the corner and motioning for Silas to step inside.
"The ones you just saw were the standard Pokémon eggs, prepared for general trainers. But for you, it's different you can choose from here instead."
Silas examined the Pokémon eggs in the new room and immediately noticed a significant improvement in quality.
"Nosepass, Roggenrola, Rockruff, Rhyhorn, Gligar, Drilbur, Swinub, Wooper..."
There were only one or two eggs per species, but the variety was impressive. Moreover, their potential ranged from Advance to Pseudo-Elite and even full Elite tier.
"But this isn't the last room, is it?" Silas asked, pointing at a door identical to the one Brock had just unlocked.
"You're right, but the Pokémon in there aren't available for you to pick at least not yet. Once you're done choosing here, I can take you in for a look.
If you become a Breeder Master or an Elite Four member in the future, I can let you pick one from there in advance," Brock said matter-of-factly.
"Haha, that day will come," Silas replied confidently as he selected an egg. "I'll take this one."
"Yeah, this little guy has great potential. I estimate its talent to be at least Elite level. If its mother had been a Champion-level Pokémon instead of just an Elite-tier one, its potential could have been even higher," Brock commented.
Seeing Silas make his choice, Brock took a quick note of it before instructing him to place the egg in an incubator so he could take it with him later.
"Come with me and take a look inside. You might just find your future partner here," Brock teased as he opened a third door.
Inside, there were five Pokémon eggs, each securely stored and carefully monitored by various instruments measuring their vital signs.
"These are all top-tier Pokémon eggs. Even I don't have the right to choose from them for breeding.
This one is a Larvitar, the offspring of my father's Tyranitar. It's estimated to have near-Champion potential.
That one is a Trapinch, and the one next to it is an Aron. Over there is the offspring of my grandfather's Champion Swampert, and finally, there's an Axew.
Their potential probably isn't at the Champion level, but they're all at least near-Champion tier, with a slim chance of reaching Elite Four potential," Brock explained with a hint of pride.
Silas couldn't help but feel a pang of envy.
A Tyranitar, Flygon, Aggron, Swampert, and Haxorus in their final evolutions—was this the privilege of the wealthy?
Out of curiosity, Silas used Zero to check the eggs' potentials.
The Larvitar had Champion-level potential, while the other four were near-Champion. Adding that to the collection of Advance, Pseudo-Elite, and Elite tier Pokémon outside, this breeding facility alone was worth nearly four billion Pokédollars.
It was absolutely overwhelming.
"As far as I can tell, there are quite a few Pokémon with Elite or higher potential," Silas remarked as they walked out.
Brock narrowed his eyes. "It only seems that way. Since you're from Viridian City, you've been to the black market there, right?"
Without waiting for Silas to answer, Brock continued explaining.
"Take the Viridian black market as an example. It gathers nearly all the wild Pokémon eggs produced in the Kanto region, including some bred by influential families and Gym leaders.
With such a massive base, the number of Advance-tier Pokémon eggs for each species is usually no more than 50 per year, and some species only have 1 to 20, or even just a handful.
Pseudo-Elite Pokémon eggs are even rarer, and eggs with true Elite potential appear only once in a while.
What you just saw in Pewter Gym's Pokémon egg reserves might seem like a lot, but they've been accumulated over decades.
Most of them are still Advance-tier. In the second room, Pseudo-Elite and Elite eggs made up less than 20% of the total, with only around a dozen reaching Elite potential.
And just because a Pokémon has Elite potential doesn't mean it will definitely reach that level. It just means its progress up to near-Elite will be smoother.
The higher a Pokémon's potential, the faster it can grow during its early stages.
But breaking through from Pseudo Elite to Elite and beyond is another challenge. Having Elite potential only means the Pokémon has a chance to reach that level; it's not a guarantee.
If a trainer fails to train it properly, an Elite-potential Pokémon might never surpass Pseudo-Elite it happens all the time.
A lot of Pokémon's potential ends up being wasted that way," Brock concluded.
This was exactly why Flint initially didn't think much of Silas having two high-potential Pokémon.
