Chapter 23 - Fix or Break things?

Madeline's POV.

I don't know how and why, but I was suddenly inside Liam's car, with Sebastian driving in the front.

The process was so fast with Liam's mum helping me pack my dress, forget about helping me pack, she even dressed me!

Right now, I looked like an overdressed snowman, with a hat, sunglasses, cap, mask, and scarf. 'Wouldn't this draw more attention?'

If the intention is to reduce attention, isn't it better if we were dressed as normal people? Liam, unlike me, seemed so comfortable in these stuffy clothes; the entertainment industry seemed like a glorious place before, but now I was reconsidering it.

''Do you want to turn the A/C on?''

I turned my head towards Liam, refusing the idea, sure the clothes were stuffy but winter was almost here.

Though it never snowed in this state, the cold was pretty bad, or maybe I was just not tolerant of the cold.

Suddenly curious I asked, ''Where exactly is this island?''

Liam was already a hard person to read, with all these things covering his face, I couldn't even watch the expressions on his face.

''It's in another state.''

''Oh''

'Wait...What?'

I twisted my body so that I could face him, removing my mask, I asked him, ''What do you mean? Like I am going to a different state, where is the ticket?''

He just shrugged in response, ''Who said anything about a ticket? We are taking our private jet.''

I shook my head correcting him, ''Not our, your.''

Hearing my response, he now completely focused his attention on me, ''I mean even though it's a contract, you are a part of the Fernandes family now, so what is ours is yours too, for a year.''

I don't know why, but that made my stomach flip and my heart race.

'Did Mrs Fernandes add a love potion to his food yesterday?'

I wish that were the case because if Liam Fernandes kept feeding my delusions this way, then I might fall in love with him despite the dangers.

Because falling in love is the easiest thing I can do, but will my heart be able to bear the ache that comes afterward?

The rest of the journey was quiet because we reached our destination in ten minutes, which was an airport just dedicated to private jet facilities.

Now I was nervous because things were progressing too fast. How did I just trust a man I barely knew and set out to travel with him to another state?

If I were a character in a horror or zombie movie, I think I'd be the first one to die.

But somewhere in the corner of my heart, I knew Liam wouldn't take advantage of me because if he wanted to, he would already have, or was I trusting him too much?

I didn't know the answer, because now we were already entering the jet.

Liam walked past me, pulling off his scarf and sunglasses, suddenly looking more relaxed.

Meanwhile, I hesitated near the entrance, looking back at Sebastian, who was not coming with us and was now busy with his phone.

This was really happening.

I was about to fly to another state with my contract husband.

Liam took a seat, as he motioned for me to take a seat as well, ''Sit, why are you looking around like a raccoon waiting to steal?''

I frowned, ''First of all, do raccoons steal?''

He just chuckled, ''I don't know, it just seemed like a nice term to use, take that scarf and glasses off, weren't you feeling uncomfortable?''

''Oh right,''

I immediately took out the layers of clothes covering my face and my body, rolling my shoulders and neck as I relaxed a little.

Before I could get too comfortable in my seat, a flight attendant approached with a warm smile.

"Would you like anything to drink, Mrs Fernandes?"

The title made my stomach twist. It wasn't real, it felt so foreign to hear. "Just water, please."

Liam shot me a look, then turned to the attendant. "She'll have a ginger tea."

I narrowed my eyes. "Excuse me?"

"You get nauseous on flights, don't you?" He shrugged as if it were common knowledge.

I blinked. He wasn't wrong—but how did he know that? Before I could question him about it, the engines roared to life, and the jet started moving.

As the plane ascended, I pressed my back into the seat, inhaling deeply.

''How did you know about it though?'' I narrowed my eyes at him.

Liam cleared his throat, ''Mum told me.''

My frown deepened. The only people who knew about my nausea were my parents, my dad couldn't have informed Mrs Fernandes about it, or did he?

Once we reached the altitude, the flight attendant returned with my tea. I took a sip, the tea relaxing my throat.

I glanced at Liam, who was now looking at me as if he wanted to say something. "What?" I asked.

''You look so nervous.''

I huffed. "Of course, I am. I just agreed to go on a trip with a man I barely know, in a fake marriage, on a private jet. Forgive me for having some thoughts."

Liam chuckled, shaking his head. "Relax, Madeline. It's just a trip. Nothing more."

But that was the problem.

Nothing more.

Then why did it feel like everything?

''How many hours is it from here?'' I asked him, hoping to settle the nervousness I was feeling.

''Barely an hour.''

I gasped, ''Just to travel an hour, you used a private jet?!''

Liam dropped his tablet, ''Madeline, what do you want now?''

I narrowed my eyes at him, ''See, see, look at you! Why are you getting annoyed? I was just asking.''

He just sighed, ''It's common sense, yes. What do you want me to say, No? And I'm only using this because it's urgent, so unplanned and messy, this whole marriage is so please.''

I was angry now, I didn't know why but I was, I didn't like the way he spoke to me even though it was the truth.

If he was trying to fix things between us, oh boy! he couldn't get more wrong.
