Some of Valerya's colleagues stopped to stare as she briskly walked to the station. She saw Yeryn sleazily watching a lady whom she assumed was a new intern walk by. She stood in front of him, obstructing his view.
He turned to her in annoyance. "What is it, Valerya?"
"Where is Marcus?" she asked.
"Who?"
"Marcus. He was brought here a few hours ago for vandalizing an officer's vehicle."
"Oh, loud guy. Kept yapping about injustice and shit. IR 3."
She made her way to the third interrogation room, maintaining a brave façade but really hoping the chief wouldn't catch her.
Davys was waiting in the car, so she made a mental note to be quick. Before going to the station, she had apologized for being a terrible bodyguard, but he had only asked her to be fair with Marcus. When she got down from the car, she was too angry to note that he was closely following her. As Davys stepped into the station, Yeryn, who was now eating a sandwich, hurriedly stood up, spilling his coke all over his shirt.
"Firs…," Yeryn began, but Davys shushed him. he gesticulated for everyone at the station to sit as he walked by, following Valerya.
As soon as Valerya walked into the interrogation room, she sighted Sebastian facing Marcus, a good-looking black boy, solemnly as he interrogated him. Marcus stood up on sighting her but moved back a few paces when her fist connected with his nose.
"What the hell did you do to my sister?" Valerya yelled as Sebastian stood between her and the boy who was then bleeding profusely from his nose. Davys watched calmly from the doorway.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Valerya. Calm down," Sebastian said. "I won't let your emotions get in the way of my investigation."
"And I won't stand for anyone messing with my innocent little sister," she spat.
"Innocent?" Marcus cried in surprise. "Lili is the most manipulative, spiteful little bitch I've ever had the misfortune to come across in my entire life. I curse the day I met her." He barely dodged when Valerya's shoes came flying at his head.
"It's true," he insisted.
"How about you tell us your side of the story?" Sebastian asked calmly.
"Okay. I and Lili have been going out for a bit yeah? And all of a sudden, my ex chats me up, yeah? And apparently, they have some sort of beef going on yeah? Lili seduced me originally because Maribel, who is my ex, pissed her off yeah? And I wanted something new yeah? But I actually do love Maribel yeah? And besides, Lili is annoying and spoilt. I couldn't stand her, yeah?" he explained. Valerya put a hand over her left temple as she actively tried to not have a migraine.
"So I break up with Lili yeah? And I tell her I'm getting back together with Maribel right? And she acts like it's okay. She says she was even bored of me. I thought it went better than expected, yeah?
"So she offers to drive right? And I let her because it's her sister's car after all. On the expressway, she starts getting all agitated and saying she'll kill us both. She speeds up and purposely crashes into a wall. I'm lucky to be alive. The airbag from Mirabelle cushioned our collision but I was knocked unconscious.
"I don't know how she did it, but when I woke up, I was at the driver's side and the cops had already surrounded the car. She was beside me pretending to be unconscious. I know because whenever she pretends to sleep, she clenches and releases her fist simultaneously, yeah? I suspect that when I was unconscious, she must have pulled me to the driver's side and switched positions so that I would take the blame."
Valerya tried to hide her growing horror as she realized he was probably telling the truth. Lilliban did have a habit of clenching her fists whenever she pretended to sleep. Valerya was not willing to let him off the hook though.
"If you were that injured, then why aren't you at the hospital? And why would she tell me you caused the accident out of spite?"
"I was knocked unconscious but had no internal injuries. Only a few bruises. I was just discharged when the warrant for my arrest was sent. I was taken for questioning from the hospital door. And she said what she said because she's a pathological liar," he replied with resentment.
Valerya was so many things, but one thing she wasn't, was a hypocrite. She knew how to own up to her mistakes when she was wrong.
"Marcus, I'm really sorry," she said. "I believe you, and I didn't mean to hit you. I thought you hurt my sister so I was defending her."
"Whatever, bro," he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
"And I promise to handle all of your hospital bills. Fair enough?"
"Thanks. And I'll forget you hit me."
"Also, I'll ensure Lilliban calls you to apologize."
"Heck no, bro. If I ever see her again, it would be too soon. Just get her away from me and we'll be even, yeah?" he said. "Can I go now?" he asked Sebastian.
"You're free to leave," he replied. As Marcus left, he kept his head down, so did not notice when he walked right by Davys. Sebastian and Valerya watched him leave and noticed the president's son standing by the doorway.
"First son Marjan. Salem," Sebastian greeted as he placed a hand on his chest.
"Davys. Did you see all that?" Valerya asked appalled. Sebastian threw her a look, stunned. He was probably surprised she was already on a first-name basis with the future president.
"Only from the point when you almost took his teeth out," he replied. She noticed he did not smile.
"Valerya, I believe it's high time you have a stern talk with your sister," Sebastian advised. "Now you have to pay for the car repairs as well as Marcus's hospital bills. And not to talk about the reports you'll have to write." They both shuddered at the mention of a report.
"Do that, okay?" Sebastian continued.
She nodded and headed out the door, past Davys who had a disapproving frown.
"You pack a mean punch though," she thought she heard Davys mutter as they walked away, leaving Sebastian staring after them.
