Footsteps echoed in unison through the corridor as Erik and Simon entered the conference room, one after the other. They struck their fists against their chests in a formal salute.
"Baron!"
Seeing Erik appear alongside Simon, Rus let a faint, knowing smile play at his lips—he understood exactly what his loyal officer was thinking.
Lately, Rus had been far too busy. Most military affairs had been left in Erik's hands, and the two hadn't had much time to communicate. Now, seeing himself summoned alongside Simon, Erik was clearly seizing the chance to reassert his presence.
But Rus wasn't displeased. In fact, Erik's desire to show his worth only proved his loyalty. A man without ambition wouldn't bother.
With a nod of acknowledgment, Rus turned to Erik.
