Yang Tao, full of battle spirit, took Sunflora to the riverbank, where many Water-type Pokémon appeared.
"You gotta pick the easy ones to start!" Since this was his first Pokémon battle, Yang Tao looked for a Level 1 Magikarp to practice on.
There were plenty of Magikarp in the river, but Level 1 ones were rare. After searching for a while, he finally found one.
"Go!"
He tossed Sunflora in front of the Magikarp. "Sunflora, use Absorb!"
Green energy orbs flew from Magikarp's body into Sunflora, restoring its health.
With a level advantage and a type advantage, Xiao Jin defeated the Magikarp in one move. Yang Tao received his battle rewards.
But just before fainting, the Magikarp seemed to mutter something about the battle being unfair.
Yang Tao didn't hear it.
He checked the items dropped by the Magikarp—just another dried fish, as if hinting at something. Meanwhile, Oddish gained 10 experience points.
"Nice job, Sunflora! You're really strong!"
Pokémon are smart, and Yang Tao's praise made it a little shy.
And so, Yang Tao continued clearing out the powerful Magikarp in the river with Oddish.
For some reason, the battle rewards were always just dried fish!
Time passed quickly, and along the way, he collected a lot of berries.
At this point, Oddish had run out of energy to use moves. This was one downside of a game-like system—unlike in Ash's world, where Pokémon could keep using moves as long as they had stamina, here, if the PP (Power Points) ran out, moves couldn't be used anymore.
Yang Tao sighed. "I'm out of move points. Guess I should find a Pokémon Center."
Even though he wanted to keep farming experience like this, he had no choice but to stop and search for a Pokémon Center.
He picked up Oddish and flew into the sky, scanning the area.
Soon, he spotted a Pokémon Center in a nearby village.
Yang Tao landed, took out a Poké Ball, and said to Oddish, "Little Gold, get inside for a bit so you can heal up."
Oddish, still at full health, turned into a red light and entered the Poké Ball.
I mean, come on, it was only fighting Magikarp that could do nothing but Splash. Was there even a chance of getting hurt?
He handed the Poké Ball to Nurse Joy, or rather, the NPC version of her.
