Li Cheng shut his mouth as Lin Fan cast him a cold glance and then turned away.
"Lin Fan's temper is surprisingly good. He's just letting Li Cheng go?"
"What? If someone kept targeting me like that, I wouldn't let them off so easily."
"Let's be real—Lin Fan is just scared of the Federation. I thought he was supposed to be so impressive."
"Well, Li Cheng is the research division's Director, after all."
"For all his supposed disdain for the Federation, I guess Lin Fan isn't that powerful."
The crowd murmured among themselves, convinced that Lin Fan had let Li Cheng off because he feared his status.
Lin Fan, hearing their chatter, made no effort to explain.
In truth, Lin Fan wasn't someone known for patience or mercy. Li Cheng's repeated provocations had already pushed him to the edge.
With Lin Fan's temperament, letting Li Cheng go seemed impossible.
This grudge would be avenged—but not today.
Though the Federation was a hollow shell of its former self, Li Cheng still held the title of research division Director.
Lin Fan could confront Li Cheng head-on because it was a personal matter between the two of them. Insulting Li Cheng was one thing.
But if Lin Fan killed him in front of everyone, it would humiliate the entire Federation, making them his enemy.
So no matter what, Lin Fan couldn't publicly kill Li Cheng in front of so many witnesses.
A smart man knew when to bide his time.
And acts like murder? Those were best carried out discreetly.
Meanwhile, as Lin Fan turned and walked away, Lillian sheathed her blade. Li Cheng finally let out a breath of relief.
Li Cheng had no idea what Lin Fan was truly thinking.
If he knew, he might have cursed out loud.
So you're not letting me go after all? You're just planning to kill me somewhere less crowded?
But oblivious to Lin Fan's plans, Li Cheng genuinely believed Lin Fan was too afraid of his position as research division Director to kill him.
With the Serpent Lady's death, the monsters on the first floor of the Nine-Story Monster Tower began scattering. Without their boss to keep them in check, they were like headless chickens, running amok.
"Crap! They're not following Lin Fan anymore—they're attacking us now!"
"Stop talking and run! There's too many of them—we'll die here!"
"All I want to know is how much gold Lin Fan got for killing the Serpent Lady."
"This isn't the time to ask that. If you keep asking, you won't have a life left!"
The zombies began randomly attacking the surrounding crowd. Their chaotic assault overwhelmed most people, who were struggling to cope.
Unlike Lin Fan, the others were armed with only stone swords, which dealt a measly 5 damage per hit. Against the massive zombie horde, that was little more than a scratch.
"Oh my god! Why the hell did I even come in here?!"
"I'm going to die here! I should've never gotten greedy over the 20 gold per zombie bounty!"
"Taking on one or two zombies is doable, but fighting a whole horde? That's suicide!"
"Just now, watching Lin Fan single-handedly hold off thousands of zombies, I thought it looked easy. Now I see how stupid I was."
"Let's retreat to the outside of the Nine-Story Monster Tower. Gold can be earned again, but if you lose your life, it's over."
Many quickly realized the danger and gave up on farming monsters inside the Nine-Story Monster Tower, rushing toward the exit.
Although the perimeter was still surrounded by a fair number of zombies, the desperate crowd banded together. Dealing with a few dozen zombies wasn't beyond their capabilities.
As time passed, more and more people successfully escaped the Nine-Story Monster Tower.
But Lin Fan remained calm and composed, standing in the center of the tower.
At the central point, thousands of zombies surrounded him.
They bared their fangs and claws, roaring ferociously at Lin Fan.
His expression remained calm as he gripped the iron sword in his hand, carving a bloody path through the countless zombies.
With the Nine Nether buff, Lin Fan could one-shot the Serpent Lady with 500 HP—these small fry were no threat to him at all.
What others saw as formidable monsters were nothing more than ants under Lin Fan's blade, helplessly crushed.
The monsters fell in droves, one after another. Those who had been preparing to retreat from the Nine-Story Monster Tower paused, swallowing hard as they watched Lin Fan effortlessly dominate the zombie horde.
"Is this guy even human?"
"How strong is he? Is he even from the same world as us?"
"I'm seriously questioning reality right now."
"I didn't care much about Lin Fan before, but after seeing his performance today, I just want to ask: Brother Fan, do you need an accessory for your leg? Let me hug it!"
"Forget accessories—Brother Fan, you're my dad now."
"Step aside, everyone. I'm first in line—Brother Fan, you're a legend."
"Do you think if I go up and beg him now, Brother Fan will let me be his lackey?"
Even as they joked around, they didn't stop moving.
Lin Fan might be able to handle thousands of monsters, but they couldn't. To save their lives, they had no choice but to retreat from the tower.
Many had already left the Nine-Story Monster Tower, yet Lin Fan remained calm and continued his slaughter.
In reality, Lin Fan could have easily left the horde behind and moved to the second floor to claim other rewards.
But the monsters on the first floor were worth 20 gold coins each—something you wouldn't find outside the tower. Lin Fan decided to kill them all; it was like a lucrative side gig.
As Lin Fan continued his massacre, some others decided to stay and farm monsters alongside him.
While they were scared of dying, their ambition outweighed their fear.
They understood one simple truth: rewards always come with risks.
If you're not willing to take chances, you won't gain anything.
Rather than killing 5-gold-coin monsters outside, they decided to take the risk inside the Nine-Story Monster Tower.
After all, most of them hadn't yet earned enough to buy a glass bottle.
They wanted to quickly save up 500 gold coins to purchase a glass bottle and stabilize their survival efforts.
Those who stayed behind fought desperately against the monsters, earning a significant amount of gold coins in return.
At first, the fights were tough, but the longer they stayed in the tower, the easier it felt.
Eventually, they started noticing something unusual.
"Why does it feel like the thousand-strong horde of monsters is almost gone?"
"What is Lin Fan still doing here? With his strength, he could've left this floor and gone to the second one by now."
"Don't tell me... he's planning to kill every single monster here?"
"Holy crap, seriously?"
"Lin Fan isn't even short on money. Why would he waste time farming monsters here?"
"Brother Fan, please leave us some monsters! We just want to farm the first floor for some gold coins. By the time we reach the second floor, we probably won't be able to handle anything there."
"Brother Fan, have mercy! I'm starting to feel bad for these monsters!"
"I'm begging you, Brother Fan! Leave us some monsters to kill!"
