Lys was still perplexed when a book on wand-making provided the answer: wands made of blackthorn wood were especially effective in casting dark magic.
This revelation left Lys fuming, realizing that her progress with spells wasn't entirely her own merit. In her frustration, she made a significant mistake while brewing a magical stabilizer for herself.
Her cauldron exploded, blasting a hole the size of a baby's head in the outer wall of the potion shop.
It's worth noting that the buildings in Knockturn Alley were originally constructed as a wizarding commercial district, carrying unique political significance at the time.
Back then, prominent wizarding families or anyone with vested interests in the area treated it with utmost importance. During the era when ancient magic was still widely practiced, the houses in Knockturn Alley were fortified with magical contracts, protective arrays, and spells cast by top-tier wizards. It was considered one of the safest places outside of Hogwarts.
Even after those families either perished or moved away, the magic continued to operate silently. Over centuries, despite wear and tear, the buildings remained relatively sturdy and secure.
This is why so many dark wizards felt safe setting up shop in Knockturn Alley. As long as they stayed within their stores, the risks were minimized, and escape was always an option if needed.
However, the hole in the wall triggered a cascade of thoughts in Senna's mind.
If a failed potion by an underage witch could breach the house's defenses, was this place still worth keeping?
Adding to her unease, the small trinkets Lys had placed on the shelves for security purposes often flickered unexpectedly in the dead of night.
Was the house simply old and deteriorating, or was there something more sinister at play?
These thoughts weighed heavily on Senna. Recently, the pure-blood advocate had been growing increasingly aggressive, making the alley more perilous. Any slip-up could spell disaster.
Moreover, Senna couldn't shake the feeling that the old pervert across the street, who conducted experiments on Muggles, was eyeing her shop with malicious intent.
Finding a new place wasn't feasible for Senna at the moment, but staying here didn't feel safe either. It didn't take her long to decide that safety came first.
The next morning, she moved all the unprocessed materials and other items from the shop back home. Then, with Lys's help, she sorted through all the potions.
She informed Lys that after leaving today, they wouldn't be returning for a while.
Lys helped pack up their belongings and, as they left, tossed a few small trinkets into August's shop window as a farewell.
Senna, looking at the large box of potions, decided to head to Diagon Alley.
As usual, Lys worked diligently to sell the goods, while Senna stood with her arms crossed, occasionally nibbling on a chicken leg or a biscuit.
Perhaps it was bad timing, or maybe the Dark Lord's recent brutal actions had truly terrified the wizards. The streets were nearly deserted, and even the magical flower shop next door was closed, with a few wilting magical plants left at its entrance.
In any case, the potions weren't selling as quickly as before.
A hunched wizard with straw-like hair shuffled over. His eyes darted nervously, as if expecting someone to attack him at any moment. His entire demeanor exuded sleaziness.
The stench of unwashed socks hit Lys, making her cover her nose.
Before Lys could catch her breath to say anything, Senna dismissed him sharply. "Mungus, there's nothing here that interests you. You'd best leave now."
"Oh! Oh! If it isn't the famous potioneer Miss Lam. Oh, of course, of course. Such fine potions. Well, I won't intrude any longer. Farewell."
As soon as Senna could no longer see him, she grabbed Lys by the sleeve, intending to Apparate away, leaving the potions on the ground behind.
However, after reciting the spell twice, Lys still didn't feel the familiar sensation of being compressed and distorted.
Feeling Senna's tight grip on her clothes and hearing unfamiliar curses spill from her mother's mouth, Lys knew.
Something was about to happen.
