Cherreads

Chapter 123 - The Moving Day

The morning sun streamed through Aiko's bedroom window, casting soft golden light over the half-packed boxes scattered across the wooden floor. The air smelled of nostalgia—a mixture of old books, freshly laundered clothes, and the faint scent of paint lingering from her latest sketches. Today was the day. The day she and Haruto would leave their hometown and step into a new chapter of their lives in Tokyo.

Aiko sat on her bed, gazing at a framed photograph in her hands. It was from their middle school days, a picture of her and Haruto laughing under the cherry blossom tree near the school. She traced the edges of the frame, her chest tightening. So much had changed since then. They had grown, matured, and now, they were about to take on the world together.

Her mother's voice called from the kitchen. "Aiko, breakfast is ready!"

She took a deep breath, setting the photo down carefully before heading downstairs. The smell of miso soup and grilled fish filled the kitchen. Her parents were already at the table, waiting for her.

"You're all packed, right?" her father asked, sipping his tea.

Aiko nodded, taking a seat. "Almost. Just a few last things to put away."

Her mother gave her a warm smile but couldn't hide the sadness in her eyes. "It's going to be strange not having you around. The house will feel empty."

"I'll call every day," Aiko promised, her voice soft.

They ate in quiet understanding, the unspoken emotions lingering in the air. Her mother occasionally glanced at her with teary eyes, while her father, though composed, seemed to be lost in thought. Aiko knew this was hard for them, just as it was for her.

After breakfast, she returned to her room to finish packing. She folded her favorite sweaters, carefully placed her sketchbooks in her bag, and wrapped up the last few trinkets that held sentimental value. Just as she was taping up her final box, her phone buzzed.

Haruto:I'm outside.

She smiled, grabbed her bag, and took one last look around her room. This was the place where she had grown up, where she had spent countless nights dreaming about the future. And now, that future was waiting for her in Tokyo.

Downstairs, her parents stood by the door. Her mother pulled her into a tight hug. "Take care of yourself, Aiko. Eat well, rest properly, and don't push yourself too hard."

"I will," Aiko whispered, hugging her back.

Her father patted her head gently. "Make the most of this opportunity. We're proud of you."

With one last deep breath, she stepped outside. The sight of Haruto standing by a small moving truck filled her with a mix of excitement and bittersweet emotions. He was dressed casually in a hoodie and jeans, but there was something different about him today—a quiet determination in his eyes, as if he, too, understood the weight of this moment.

"Ready?" he asked, offering her a reassuring smile.

Aiko nodded. "Yeah."

They loaded her boxes into the truck, and before long, they were on their way to Haruto's house to pick up his things. The drive was quiet at first, the town passing by like a moving memory. They passed by their old school, the park where they used to hang out, the small bookstore where Aiko had spent countless afternoons.

"Feels weird, doesn't it?" Haruto said suddenly, breaking the silence.

Aiko turned to him. "What does?"

"Leaving all of this behind."

She nodded. "Yeah. It doesn't feel real yet."

When they arrived at Haruto's house, his parents were already waiting outside with his luggage. His mother, like Aiko's, was struggling to keep her emotions in check. She hugged him tightly, murmuring words of encouragement and love. His father gave him a firm handshake, his eyes filled with quiet pride.

"You'll do great things, Haruto," his father said. "Stay focused, and don't forget where you came from."

Haruto smiled. "I won't."

With their goodbyes said, they got back into the truck and started their journey to Tokyo. The road stretched ahead of them, a long ribbon of possibilities. Aiko leaned back in her seat, letting the hum of the engine and the occasional songs playing from the radio fill the silence.

"You nervous?" Haruto asked after a while.

"A little," Aiko admitted. "Excited, too. But mostly nervous."

"Same," Haruto said. "But we've got each other, right?"

She turned to look at him, her heart swelling. "Yeah. We do."

The journey took several hours, but time passed quickly as they talked about everything—their dreams, their worries, the things they were looking forward to. It felt comforting, knowing that no matter how much things changed, this connection between them remained the same.

By the time they reached Tokyo, the city's towering buildings and neon lights surrounded them, a stark contrast to their quiet hometown. Everything felt bigger, louder, faster. Aiko stared out the window, taking it all in. This was their new home now.

They arrived at their shared apartment—a modest but cozy place near their universities. The moment they stepped inside, Aiko let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. The place was empty except for a few basic furnishings, but it was theirs. A fresh start.

Haruto set down his bags and stretched. "Well, we made it."

Aiko grinned. "Yeah. We did."

They spent the rest of the evening unpacking, arranging their belongings, and making the space feel like home. As night fell, they sat on the small balcony, overlooking the bustling city below. The stars were faint, hidden behind the bright city lights, but the feeling of possibility was unmistakable.

Aiko sighed contentedly. "I think I'm going to like it here."

Haruto glanced at her, his expression soft. "Me too."

They sat there for a while, side by side, letting the reality of their new life sink in. It was scary, yes. But it was also exciting. And as long as they had each other, they knew they could face whatever came next.

Tomorrow, a new chapter would begin. But tonight, they simply enjoyed the quiet, knowing that they had finally taken their first step toward the future they had always dreamed of—together.
