Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Drain (2)

She had laid there not being able to sleep, move,or even think. It was like being in a trance or an awakened vegetative state. Her immobility was what frustrated her most but she let herself rest. The floor was cold and it recked. The low temperature made her numb for a while. Once she got fed up of this position, she willed herself to get back up.

With much effort and likelihood of almost falling over many times, she finally lay Maddie next to Annah. She sat down next to them and her brain finally let her sleep. The darkness engulfed her whole,it tendrils wrapped around her in deep dreamless sleep. Her conscious drifted aimlessly without a care in the world.

Everything around her seemed odd. Her darkness slowly subsided letting her open her eyes slightly, she couldn't see much but everything seemed the same. She tried to move but her body was still asleep not willing to move. Her butt was numb from sitting on the cold floor that long. It started to hurt a bit. She waited until she regained control of her whole body.

The effort made her breathless and regretful. Shit. She cursed inwardly as she made her way to the bed on the left. She stood at the bed's frame, steading herself while catching her breath. She needed to get to the top bunk for better rest but as she looked up, she felt her strength wavering. A fall from up here won't kill me but at my current state, I would probably be out for days. She thought harshly before embarking on the ascend.

With each heavy step, her body grew weaker, more painful. She became lightheaded but luckily made it. She collapsed on the thin mattress and heaved a sigh in relief. Getting down was a task for another time. She laid there immobile once again. Her mind began to race thinking of why they were here.

Now with a little rest, her brain could comprehend, not fully but ar least try, their purpose here. She remembered the kidnapping, the five men were organized. They must have done this a lot. Their coordination was seamless. Two in the car as drivers, two would go in to carry the captive and the other was on watch duty. Everything started to make sense to her now. This had been a well ocastrated plan.

Her chances of escape were close to none then. Her thoughts raced to what happened just a while ago. The blood. The process was well rehearsed too. But why would they need blood and that much of it too? She racked her brain for a while before it hit her. There could be many reasons but only three stood out to her. Human trafficking, organ transplant or human experiments.

There were loopholes as well. Why didn't they knock me out during the kidnapping or transportation? None of the men looked the same. I never saw the same man twice. Why take our parents too? Everyone in the cells seemed to be below nineteen. Or they have a different floor for each age bracket. But the blood was too much. True as it may, blood was needed during transplants to check its compatibility, but only a small sample was needed. They had taken almost a litter of blood at most.

Everyone here is weak meaning all of us had our blood taken. Another disturbing discovery. She couldn't wrap her finger on what these people were planning but she was certain it was something big and horrible. She decided not to dwell on it any further as her head began to ache again.

Sleep slowly engulfed her again. But this time it wasn't as peaceful. She kept hearing growling, like from a caged animal. It was disturbing, not the noise it made, but how it sounded. She only heard it faintly from time to time but when she did hear it, she was sute it sounded wounded. The growling didn't last and peace ensued.

As she slept, her blood was quickly being taken to the highest floor of the old building. The fifth floor, with a new label. Specimen 1110. It was being taken together with all the other containers of drained blood. After making its way through the old elevator shaft,it finally reached the laboratory.

Everything was spotlessly gleaming. It was a major contrast compared to other parts of the building. It seemed new, clean and so white all covered in plastic. People were moving about testing and recording. The large trolley carrying the samples was left at it's designated spot, one after the other.

The men who brought the trolleys walked instinctively to the next station to pick up carts filled with blood bags and snaked their way out. Each man had their own floor to cover. The bags were distributed equally to all the workers, each sitting at a long, large, wooden dining table.

They all opened it, and one by one, each of them took a sip. Some wafted the scent before drinking, others took small sips savouring the metallic taste while others gulped it down in one go. In the end, they were all unsatisfied for it was only one bag but grateful as the energy that coursed through their veins was like no other.

The effects of the blood was almost immediate. It made them feel stronger, faster and their senses sharper. This kind of meal wasn't easy to find, this was the only place they could get such blood. Human blood was easy to get as humans were weak, but this wasn't just human blood,it was modified to have lasting effects. And it tasted great.

This was the only nutrition they had, the only diet they were given since they turned. Or since they were forced to turn.

The man behind the kidnapping, the one who owned the building, the one who held the experiments, the one who headed the entire organization sat quietly on his chair, sipping something red as wine but sweeter. Blood!
