Chapter 120 A Distance Measured in Glances

Zuo Qinghuan wanted to move closer to Qin Wanshu, but her body wouldn't respond. Qin Wanshu's gaze lacked the warmth it once held when she looked at Zuo Qinghuan. Her eyes were too indifferent, neither cold nor welcoming. Zuo Qinghuan knew Qin Wanshu was angry, even if the feeling was as faint as a trick of her own imagination. But Zuo Qinghuan was certain of it, and it made her feel somewhat lost as she looked at Qin Wanshu.

The moment Zuo Qinghuan turned, Kitano Aoba's eyes followed her movement and also landed on Qin Wanshu. Seeing Qin Wanshu, Aoba's intuition told her this was the woman her sister loved, a woman who felt both familiar and unknown. People often said that reality rarely lives up to the hype. Aoba had always suspected her sister might be exaggerating, describing Qin Wanshu as so beautiful it seemed almost unreal. But seeing her now, Aoba realized her sister hadn't exaggerated at all. In fact, this woman's beauty was hard to put into words, so striking that Aoba felt insignificant in comparison. A pang of sadness touched Aoba's heart.

The instant Qin Wanshu saw Zuo Qinghuan, her long-dormant heart seemed to flicker to life, stirring slightly. Looking at Zuo Qinghuan's slender white back, Qin Wanshu noticed a change in her aura. In the past, Zuo Qinghuan had carried a sense of restlessness and unease, but now that seemed to have faded. She had indeed grown. Qin Wanshu also noticed Kitano Aoba beside Zuo Qinghuan, and her presence caused a small surprise. In Aoba, Qin Wanshu vaguely saw a reflection of herself from ten years ago. The feeling was complex, especially when she sensed Aoba's admiration for Zuo Qinghuan. Though Aoba hid it well, Qin Wanshu could still clearly perceive it. Had Zuo Qinghuan been with her day and night for the past three years? Zuo Qinghuan would naturally fall in love with her, so she shouldn't dislike her younger self too much, right? However, hearing Zuo Qinghuan's protective words towards Aoba, Qin Wanshu still felt a slight discomfort, even though Zuo Qinghuan was only being reasonable, especially after Shi Yunyang's somewhat excessive comment.

When Zuo Qinghuan turned around, Qin Wanshu remained slightly stunned. Zuo Qinghuan seemed to have truly transformed from someone aspiring to be a fairy into a real one. Her face gave the impression of being too beautiful for this world, too ethereal to approach. Seeing the familiar infatuation in Zuo Qinghuan's eyes, she realized that initial impression was just an illusion. She felt Zuo Qinghuan had changed, yet in some ways, nothing had changed at all. Qin Wanshu concealed the swirl of emotions in her heart, not wanting Zuo Qinghuan to see too much. Although Zuo Qinghuan's helpless and ingratiating gaze momentarily softened her heart, the discomfort lingered, along with a significant amount of unresolved anger.

When Kitano Aoba looked at her, Qin Wanshu politely nodded and offered a slight smile. Aoba returned the smile.

Zuo Qinghuan saw Qin Wanshu's gaze quickly flick away from her. Qin Wanshu was definitely angry. Zuo Qinghuan wanted to walk towards her, so many things she longed to say. But at that moment, Qin Wanshu turned and walked towards the stage to give the opening speech for the evening's party. That sudden turn made Zuo Qinghuan feel inexplicably lost. But she quickly hid the feeling and simply watched Qin Wanshu. Just seeing her brought a sense of happiness.

"Qin Wanshu only smiled at Aoba. She didn't smile at you. It seems she hasn't forgiven you yet..." Li Xin said to Zuo Qinghuan, her expression worried.

Zuo Qinghuan's gaze remained fixed on Qin Wanshu. Her eager eyes seemed to want to absorb everything she had missed in the past three years, as if she hadn't heard Li Xin's words at all. In fact, she knew perfectly well that if Qin Wanshu said she wouldn't contact her for three years, she truly wouldn't. For this woman of her word, Zuo Qinghuan had already mentally prepared herself.

"You're hopeless," Li Xin said, shrugging as she observed Zuo Qinghuan. Pursuing goddesses truly required extraordinary courage. Looking at the noble and elegant Qin Wanshu on stage, Li Xin couldn't help but feel that this woman must be incredibly difficult to win over.

When Kitano Aoba saw Zuo Qinghuan, she sensed the truth: Qin Wanshu was the entirety of her sister's world at that moment. Her sister must have so much she wanted to say. Aoba sincerely hoped Qin Wanshu wasn't angry with her sister and that they could become a loving couple.

"Sister, I saw Xiao Yuandao. I want to ask her about our mother." Kitano Aoba had come to China for two reasons: curiosity about Qin Wanshu and to see her mother. Having spotted Xiao Yuandao, she wanted to talk to her about their mother and no longer wanted to cling to her sister. Her sister probably had a lot to discuss with Miss Qin, and she didn't want to intrude.

"Alright." As expected, Zuo Qinghuan followed Aoba's gaze and also saw Xiao Yuandao. She knew Aoba really wanted information about their mother. Xiao Yuandao had lived with Aunt Xiao for many years, so it would be good for them to talk. Moreover, Zuo Qinghuan's heart was currently consumed by Qin Wanshu, and she worried she wouldn't be able to properly care for Aoba. She trusted Xiao Yuandao would take good care of her.

Aoba left the charity gala with Xiao Yuandao, while Zuo Qinghuan's attention remained glued to Qin Wanshu.

Zuo Qinghuan felt a surge of anxiety. The woman she loved was so close, yet she couldn't reach her. Either she was being stopped by others, or Qin Wanshu was. So, for the entire evening, Zuo Qinghuan couldn't find a moment alone with Qin Wanshu. Seeing that the gala was nearing its end and Qin Wanshu was about to leave, Zuo Qinghuan disregarded the two people still clinging to her. After a few polite words, she shook them off and quickly hurried after Qin Wanshu.

"Qin Wanshu." Zuo Qinghuan nervously grabbed Qin Wanshu's wrist, afraid she would turn and leave immediately.

Qin Wanshu simply looked at Zuo Qinghuan with an indifferent expression.

"Is something the matter?" Qin Wanshu asked, her tone devoid of warmth.

"Yes, many things." Zuo Qinghuan had so much she wanted to say. She didn't want their first reunion to pass in silence.

"Let's talk later. It's late, time to head back and rest," Qin Wanshu said faintly.

"Qin Wanshu, I've missed you terribly," Zuo Qinghuan said suddenly, looking directly at her.

"Oh, I see." Qin Wanshu's tone remained indifferent, as if she were merely acknowledging a piece of information objectively, without any emotional inflection. But Zuo Qinghuan felt the distinct chill of alienation emanating from her.
