After noticing the improvement in Eevee's stats, Kay shifted his attention back to the player, who had just snapped out of the illusion.
The guy looked around, his eyes scanning the area, and within moments, he understood what had happened.
Kay watched as the player tensed up, adopting an alert stance as he noticed Kay standing nearby. Then, his gaze fell upon the lifeless body of the Phantump. His eyes widened slightly before he turned to Kay and asked, "Was I inside an illusion, right?"
Kay simply nodded without speaking. He was impressed that the player had grasped the situation so quickly.
The guy then looked at the Phantump again and added, "Was it you who saved me?"
Seeing an opportunity, Kay nodded once more. He didn't want to reveal that he had only saved the player because he feared that defeating him in his illusion-trapped state might anger Gengar.
As soon as the other player saw Kay nodding, gratitude appeared in his expression. His stiff posture relaxed slightly, and Kay could see the appreciation in his eyes.
However, before the guy could say anything else, Kay kept his expression serious and quickly followed up with, "You should know that I was cursed by Gengar, and I want to challenge you to a battle."
Kay paused, letting his words sink in, before continuing, "I woke you from the illusion because I didn't want to fight you in that state. That wouldn't be fair."
The other player fell silent, lowering his head slightly as he thought about Kay's words. After a few seconds, he raised his head again and nodded. "Okay, I respect that. Thank you."
With the formalities settled, the player stepped back, creating a space where the battle could take place. Kay did the same, stepping to his side of the makeshift battlefield.
Without needing any spoken command, Kay waved his hand slightly, signaling Eevee to step forward. Eevee immediately leaped into position, showing its synchronization with Kay's movements.
The other player smirked slightly and called out, "Voltorb, let's battle!"
At his words, a Voltorb rolled forward onto the battlefield, electricity crackling faintly around its spherical body.
Kay pulled out his Pokedex, wanting to check the stats of his opponent's Pokémon. At the same time, he noticed the other player doing the same.
The Pokedex screen displayed the information:
Voltorb
Potential: Orange
Stage: Superior Steel
Kay knew that Voltorb would be a tough opponent. Every participant in this tournament was strong, and he couldn't afford to underestimate any of them.
However, he also understood that there was one dangerous move that could turn the tide of the battle instantly, and that was Self-Destruct.
If the other player decided to use it, it would certainly deal massive damage, but at the same time, it would leave Voltorb completely out of commission.
Given that they still had just a few hours left in the second phase of the game, Kay was confident that his opponent wouldn't make such a reckless choice.
Kay took a deep breath and issued his first command. "Eevee! Double Team, then Quick Attack!"
As soon as Eevee heard the order, it sprang into action. Its small frame became a blur as it raced around Voltorb in rapid circles, creating multiple copies of itself.
Even though Kay hadn't explicitly told Eevee to do this, it instinctively understood his strategy. Over time, their battle synchronization had improved, allowing Eevee to adapt to Kay's commands almost effortlessly.
Voltorb, now surrounded by multiple identical Eevees, wobbled in place, visibly confused. The sight of the copies darting around made it difficult to pinpoint the real one.
The other player frowned slightly but remained composed. "Voltorb! Thunder Shock with full power! Eliminate all the clones and hit the real one!"
Kay's lips curled into a faint smile. His opponent had chosen the most predictable response. Calmly, he countered, "Eevee! Endure the hit and use Toxic after Voltorb finishes its move."
Voltorb immediately began charging up electricity, crackling sparks dancing around its spherical body. Then, in an instant, it unleashed a massive Thunder Shock.
The wave of electricity surged outward, zapping each clone one by one. The air crackled with energy as the illusions flickered and disappeared, leaving behind only the real Eevee standing on the battlefield.
The real Eevee, now exposed, remained still. It watched as the last remnants of lightning arced toward it but didn't attempt to dodge. Instead, it braced itself, paws planted firmly on the ground, preparing to take the hit head-on.
The electricity coursed through Eevee's body, causing it to flinch slightly, but it held its ground. Kay had anticipated this outcome.
Since Voltorb's attack had already dispersed much of its power, taking out the clones, by the time it reached Eevee, it was significantly weaker.
The moment the attack subsided, Eevee retaliated. It opened its mouth and shot out a stream of Toxic, a dark purple liquid that sailed through the air, aimed straight at Voltorb.
The opponent's Pokémon had just finished executing its Thunder Shock and had no time to evade. The poison splattered onto Voltorb's face, and within seconds, visible purple marks began forming on Voltorb's face, and tiny toxic bubbles appeared around it, a clear indication that it had been poisoned.
Kay observed the situation carefully. Eevee's Toxic mastery was still at a low level, meaning it wouldn't deal a lot of damage immediately. However, that wasn't the main goal.
The real advantage of poisoning Voltorb was the psychological pressure it would put on the opponent. If the player wasn't experienced with Poison-type moves, he wouldn't be able to accurately judge just how dangerous the poison was.
This uncertainty would likely force him into rushed decisions to finish the battle as soon as possible, increasing the chances of making a mistake.
When the opponent saw his Voltorb had been poisoned, he cursed under his breath. His expression darkened as he realized the danger.
Toxic would continue to drain Voltorb's energy, meaning he had to act quickly before the situation got worse.
"Voltorb! Screech!" the other player commanded.
Voltorb let out a piercing, high-pitched sound that echoed across the battlefield. The sound waves were strong enough to shake the ground slightly, and if Eevee got caught in it, its Defense would be lowered significantly.
But Kay was already prepared for this possibility. "Eevee! Dig!" he ordered without hesitation.
Eevee instantly leaped up and burrowed underground, disappearing beneath the battlefield in mere seconds. Kay smirked. Underground, Eevee wouldn't be affected by Screech.
Not only did this protect it from the Defense drop, but it also set up a powerful counterattack; Dig was a Ground-type move, which was super effective against Voltorb.
The other player clenched his fists but quickly regained his composure. He took a deep breath and gave his next command. "Voltorb! Rollout!"
Voltorb started spinning rapidly, gathering Rock-type energy around its body as it rolled across the battlefield. Kay knew that the other player used Rollout to defend, not to attack.
Then, without warning, the ground beneath Voltorb cracked. In the next moment, Eevee exploded from underground, striking Voltorb with its powerful paws.
A loud impact followed. Both Pokémon were sent skidding backward from the collision, Dig and Rollout had clashed directly.
Kay narrowed his eyes. The impact had damaged both Pokémons. He needed to change his strategy. After a brief moment of thought, he gave his next command.
"Eevee! Dig again, this time, stay underground as long as possible!"
The other player's expression changed. His face twisted in frustration. He understood the danger of this move.
If Eevee remained underground, Voltorb had nothing to hit, meaning the poison damage would continue stacking up over time.
His grip on his Pokéball tightened as he barked a new command. "Voltorb! Charge!"
Voltorb stopped rolling and began gathering a massive amount of electrical energy around its body. Sparks danced in the air as its power built up.
Kay's eyes sharpened. He could tell what the opponent was planning.
He's setting up for one final attack.
After a few moments, the other player gave the final command. "Wait for Eevee to appear. Take the hit, then use Discharge with full power!"
Kay frowned slightly. It was a smart move. Discharge was an area attack, meaning even if Eevee tried to dodge, it would still get hit.
Not only that, but Discharge had a high chance of paralyzing its target. If Eevee got paralyzed, Voltorb could finish it off before the poison knocked it out.
Seconds passed. Then a sudden burst of earth!
Eevee leaped from the ground, its claws glowing with energy as it struck Voltorb head-on. The impact was devastating, Dig was extremely effective against Electric-types, and the pain was obvious on Voltorb's face.
But Voltorb endured.
Sparks flared wildly around its body as it unleashed Discharge.
A massive explosion of electricity spread through the battlefield, engulfing Eevee in a crackling storm of energy.
Eevee let out a sharp cry, its body trembling from the powerful attack.
Kay clenched his fists. He knew the battle had come down to one thing; if Eevee got paralyzed or not.
If Eevee wasn't paralyzed, Kay was confident that his victory was assured, but also if it was paralyzed and Voltorb finished the battle, Kay could use Growlithe and win the battle, but he didn't want to reveal his second Pokémon this early.
As the smoke cleared, Eevee stood on shaky legs, panting heavily. But then, it straightened its stance.
No paralysis!
Kay's lips curled into a victorious smirk. "Eevee! Dig again, and this time, use Wish while you are underground!"
The opponent's eyes widened. He realized it was over.
Wish would heal Eevee soon, and Voltorb was already suffering from Toxic damage. If the battle dragged on, it would be knocked out before it could deal any more damage.
"I surrender!"
