"Hello there viewers...Keiko here again...*I proceed to say this while traditionally bowing to the viewers as usual. To which I then proceed to bring my attention and eyesight back up again, in order to continue to address the viewers. I also now proceed to clear my throat, as I then proceed to continue, to properly address the viewers*...Now then viewers, this is going to be one of two back to back non action filled filler chapter...now then viewers, shall we begin?...*I proceed to say this, while also smiling with both of my eyes closed, and my head tilted to one side, in a very cute looking manner*...
So for this chapter viewers, we are going to be going through three separate airline accidents...
And for the first one, we are going to first be going back all the way to December 12, 1985...
Where on the morning of this day, Arrow Air Flight 1285R, an international charter flight, was carrying U.S. Army personnel from Cairo, Egypt, to their home base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, via Cologne, West Germany, and Gander, Newfoundland...
But shortly after takeoff from Canada's Gander International Airport en route to Fort Campbell, the McDonnell Douglas DC-8 that had been serving the flight stalled, crashed, and burned about half a mile from the end of the runway...
The crash killing all 248 passengers and 3 pilots, and 5 flight attendants on board...
And as for the cause of the accident? Well it was determined to be a combination of the DC-8 being overweight, and ice being present on the airframe and the wings of the aircraft...Which wound up to to the aircraft not having enough speed to get airborne...
As the combination of both the aircraft being overweight, and ice contamination, led to the aircraft stalling just after takeoff...
And to this day the crash of Arrow Air Flight 1285R, is still the deadliest aviation accident to occur on Canadian soil. But at the time of the crash, it was the deadliest aviation accident involving a DC-8. The death toll of the crash of Arrow Air Flight 1285R, would wind up being surpassed by the July 11, 1991 crash of Nigeria Airways Flight 2120. Which would lead to the deaths of al 247 passengers, 3 pilots, and 11 flight attendants on board...
Now then viewers, we will now move onto the second accident in this chapter...
And this time, we will be going a little bit further in time...All the way, to July 19, 1989...Where United Airlines Flight 232...Which at the time was being operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10...and was on route from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, with a stopover at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, before continuing to Philadelphia International Airport...
But, At 15:16, while the airplane was making a slight right turn at its cruising altitude of 37,000 feet, the fan disk of its tail-mounted number 2 engine, wound up disintegrating explosively. The uncontained failure, wound up resulting in the number 2 engine's fan disk departing the aircraft...Which wound up tearing out components including parts of the No. 2 hydraulic system and supply hoses in the process. The engine debris from the ruptured number 2 engine, had also wound up penetrating the aircraft's tail section in numerous places, including the horizontal stabilizer. Which caused a complete severing of both the No. 1 and No. 3 hydraulic systems where they passed through the horizontal stabilizer...
And as I am sure a good portion of you viewers know all too well, if you don't have any hydraulics, you have absolutely no control over any of the control systems or surfaces on the aircraft...
This was what had wound up happening just 4 years prior to Japan Airlines Flight 123 on August 12, 1985...
And while we're on the subject of 1985...that very year, was actually one of the deadliest years in the history of commercial aviation...
Because aside from the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123...there were at least 2 other fatal accidents over in the states...One being the crash of Delta Airlines Flight 191 on August 2, 1985...due to a microburst that wound up forcing the L-1011 into the ground...resulting in the deaths of 137 people...
And as for the other accident that had occurred over in the states in 1985? Well on September 6, 1985...a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-14 operating as Midwest Express Airlines Flight 105...call sign MIDEX 105...crashed just after takeoff from General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee...due to a failure of the DC-9s right hand number 2 engine just after the aircraft had passed 450 feet...
And in just a time span of ten seconds after the failure of Flight 105s right hand number 2 engine...the aircraft impacted the ground in a ninety degree right bank, and very nose down pitch...The crash wound up instantly killing all 27 passengers, 2 pilots...Both of which on this flight were captains...Which meant that they were able to switch between pilot flying and the pilot monitoring...And 2 flight attendants...
But anyway viewers, let us get back to United Airlines Flight 232...Which despite the complete loss of hydraulics and just using the throttles of both the wing mounted left hand number 1 engine, and the wing mounted right hand number 3 engine...The pilots were able to make a somewhat successful landing at Sioux City's Gateway Airport...And despite the aircraft crashing and cartwheeling down the runway...
Out of all 285 passengers, 3 pilots, and 8 flight attendants...only 112 of them were killed...
And as for the cause of the engine failure on flight 232? Well, it wound up being caused by a manufacturing defect in the number 2 engines fan disk...That over time, wound up growing into a fatigue crack...that on July 19, 1989, wound up reaching its failure point...
And now viewers, we will now head onto the third and final aviation accident that will wind up being covered in this chapter...
And for this one, we will be going just a little bit back, to January 8, 1989...
When British Midland Airways Flight 092, a Boeing 737-400, wound up crashing onto the motorway embankment between the M1 motorway and A453 road near Kegworth, Leicestershire, England. Which was while it had been attempting to make an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport...The crash wound up killing 47 of the 118 passengers, 2 pilots, and 6 flight attendants aboard flight 092...
And as for the cause? Well, the flights two pilots, Captain Kevin Hunt, and First Officer David McClelland...had mishandled a failure of one of flight 092s engines...Which due to Captain Hunt, and First Officer McClelland...being mislead into thinking that flight 092s right hand number two engine had failed...
When in reality it was their left hand number one engine...this lead to the pilots shutting down their perfectly functioning right hand number two engine...
And the rest of the accident sequence, pretty much was just a long slew of pilot related errors by both pilots, that would lead to the deaths of 47 people on board flight 092...
Now viewers, this now marks the end of this particular non action filler chapter...But, another one will wind up being right after this one...So viewers, see you lot in the next chapter...okay?...*I proceed to say this, while also smiling with both of my eyes closed, and my head tilted to one side, in a very cute looking manner*"
