It was late, and the rain was falling in heavy drops. Cliff remained seated behind his desk, listening to the steady rhythm of the water like a familiar lullaby. He looked up at the ceiling, taking a deep breath as the cold air gently seeped into the room.
He stood up slowly and walked to the window. Outside, the world seemed engulfed in silent chaos. The rain hit the cobblestone ground, slithered through the gutters into the drains. The city shone with a peaceful, almost unreal beauty.
Nothing like the environment from the beginning, when it all started. Back then, mud and dust were the only scenery the inhabitants knew.
Now, children played in the rain. Even a few adults enjoyed the moment granted by the skies, carefree and smiling.
Cliff watched the scene, a faint smile on his face without even realizing it.
Then he looked up to the sky. He saw it: the barrier. That artificial dome installed to protect the city from attacks had been deactivated—just to let the rain in.
