"Elias, you can't think like that." Norris Moore pulled the car over to the side of the road and looked at the intense boy in the passenger seat. She raised her hand and touched Elias Moore's hair, her tone gentle, "Dad did a lot for our family, and I'm not as good as you think. I'm selfish too. Over the years, everyone has been through a lot, and when you grow up, you'll understand. Everything I did was necessary; I owed you all a lot, and it was already great that dad could forgive me. Beyond that, I can't ask for too much."
"When you were reported dead, I and Zoey wanted to attend your funeral, but dad wouldn't let us go." Elias Moore's eyes reddened as he quietly complained, "He said you were no longer a part of the Moore Family, that those people wouldn't let us in. I just wanted to see you one last time, but he wouldn't allow it."
Thinking about it now, it still felt unfair.
