The gorgons were not considered low-ranked monsters among the creatures. To put it simply, they were a little higher than the centaurs and harpies, but slightly lower than the wailing banshees.
In other words, they were "neither here nor there, stuck in the middle."
To be more specific, they were on par with the Insect Men, although the Insect Men's strength lay in their innate battle talents, making them natural-born warriors.
